2021 Sprint Cup Runners

Topping the market we find Starman, who's been backed into Evens during the course of the week. Ed Walker's four-year-old ran out an impressive winner of the July Cup at Newmarket, and ran on well to claim a creditable third in the Prix Maurice de Gheest on his most recent outing.

Creative Force sits second in the market, having followed a two-length defeat in the July Cup with a narrow second to Kinross in the Lennox Stakes. Art Power ran a solo-effort for fourth in the Sprint Cup, before struggling over the minimum distance at Glorious Goodwood last time out.

Last year's Sprint Cup runner-up, Glen Shiel will be looking to end a four-race losing streak at Haydock. Clive Cox's Supremacy won the Middle Park as a juvenile, but hasn't really featured in either of his three-year-old starts.

Happy Romance steps up to Group One class, having won Listed and Group Three sprints this season. Chil Chil ran on well from an unprosperous position to finish fifth in the Nunthorpe on her last start.

Shock Nunthorpe runner-up, Emaraaty Ana also features in the Sprint Cup line-up, along with Summerghand, Garrus and Nando Parrado.

2021 Sprint Cup Tips

Starman has won five of his seven career starts thus far, with his only defeats coming on soft ground. Normally, the ground is bottomless at Haydock for the Sprint Cup, which wouldn't suit Ed Walker's sprinter. Merseyside has experienced an unusually dry summer, though, and Starman will get the good-to-firm ground he craves.

The draw, however, has not been kind on the favourite. Horses drawn low do have a good record in the Sprint Cup - barring last year, where all the best horses in the race were drawn high. Starman is down in stall ten, with hold-up horses around him, and all the likely front-runners have been drawn on the inside rail.

This may not make much of a difference, as it's clear Starman is the best horse in this race. Yet, given his short price and what could be an unfavourable draw, I'm inclined to take the favourite on, and the one who looks overpriced to me is GARRUS.

Charlie Hills' charge ran out a convincing winner of the Prix de Meautry last weekend. Garrus made all the running to beat a classy rival in Duhail, stopping the clock in a time half-a-second quicker than standard.

That was a deserved Group Three triumph for Garrus, who's been running with great credit all season. Richard Kingscote's mount lost to Came From The Dark by a neck in a handicap, when giving the winner four pounds. He's also finished second to Dream Or Dreams, fifth in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes behind that same rival, and stayed on for eighth in the July Cup after fluffing his lines at the start.

Like at Deauville, Garrus has been drawn in stall one, meaning he'll have the rail to aid his challenge. All the pace has been drawn on his side of the track, and if Kingscote's mount can sustain his challenge throughout the entire race, then I see no reason why Garrus can't be there at the business end of things.

Verdict

Starman is clearly the one to beat, but Garrus comes into this on the back of an excellent Group Three win in France last weekend and 40/1 looks a huge price about Charlie Hills' sprinter.
