One of the most important handicaps in National Hunt racing takes place at Newbury today, as 16 top chasers take part in the 2022 Coral Gold Cup.
Formerly known as the Hennessy and the Ladbrokes Trophy, this three-mile-two-contest has been won by many of the sport's best chasers, including One Man, Denman. Burrough Hill Lad and two-time winner, Arkle.
I've taken a look through the ante-post odds for Saturday's Coral Gold Cup and highlighted some key recurring trends, before picking out my best betting tips.

Between 2001 and 2016, classier horses often came to the fore in the Coral Gold Cup. Only three horses in that time period carried less than 10-12 to victory, and we saw future Cheltenham Gold Cup winners like Denman, Bobs Worth and Native River carry plenty of weight into the winners' enclosure.
Over the past five years, the quality of the entrants has decreased significantly. Four of the last five winners have carried 10-10 or less. Sizing Tennessee was a ten-year-old when he won under 11-03 in 2018 and Secret Investor - who was beaten 53 lengths in the 2020 renewal - is the only horse to have won an open Graded race following an outing in this handicap.
At first glance, this doesn't seem like a vintage renewal of the Coral Gold Cup. Corach Rambler didn't run well on his reappearance at Carlisle. Remastered is a dicey enough proposition back over fences, as is the inconsistent Chantry House, who'll carry top weight. Busselton is the only Irish entrant in this year's race, and he seems to be on a stiff enough mark following his victory in the Kerry National.

Since I tipped GERICAULT ROQUE up at 10/1 when this guide went live on Thursday, David Pipe's charge has been backed into favouritism, and it's easy to see why!
Pipe's star was given an educational ride on his first start over fences at Wetherby last season. Following that run, Gericault Roque registered four successive second-place finishes. Pipe's youngster ran a cracker behind Pats Fancy at Chepstow and pushed the well-handicapped Saint Palais all the way to the line here at Newbury. Tom Scudamore's mount then followed the superb Eclair Surf home in the Classic Chase at Warwick and found only Corach Rambler too good in the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival.
For a horse who was five-turning-six last year, those were mighty performances to put up in grueling handicaps. Returning to chasing is definitely a plus for Gericault Roque, who hurdled clumsily on his return at Aintree. Pipe's bound to have put plenty of work to his star since that reappearance and jockey, Tom Scudamore boasts an excellent record in this contest, having ridden the winner in 2018 and 2020.

Given how well he's performed on his last two starts over fences, LORD ACCORD has to arrive at Newbury with genuine hopes of winning. Our second selection has also come in for support since this guide went live, coming in from 16s to 12/1.
After a good run over hurdles on his reappearance, Lord Accord romped to victory in a Class 2 at Cheltenham's Showcase Meeting. I then backed Neil Mulholland's charge as he went up against Frodon in the Badger Beers Trophy. Richie McLernon's mount bore down on the leader turning for home and looked to be in with a good chance after pinging the second-last. Sadly, Lord Accord clattered through the final obstacle and Frodon held on to claim a famous win.
The handicapper thought Lord Accord merely ran up to his rating that day, meaning Mulholland's seven-year-old will run off the same mark of 136 on Saturday. In a race that's lacking in star quality at the top end of the weights, an in-form, race-fit, well-handicapped runner like Lord Accord must have a massive chance with just 10-4 on his back.
Verdict
