Day two of the Future Champions Festival at Newmarket is headlined by the Dewhurst Stakes. This historic seven-furlong contest has been won by a whole host of future Classic winners, including Ormonde, Nijinsky, Mill Reef and Frankel.

After ante-post favourite, Sakheer was ruled out of Saturday's race, Nostrum has jumped to the head of the betting. Sir Michael Stoute's juvenile is unbeaten in three starts, defeating Holloway Boy quite comfortably when last seen in the Tattersalls Stakes.

Charlie Appleby will be hoping that Naval Power will continue his excellent recent record in the Dewhurst. Runaway Champagne Stakes winner, Chaldean will also carry Juddmonte Studd's silks into Newmarket's Saturday feature.

Aidan O'Brien will travel to the Future Champions Festival hoping that Aesop's Fables will hand him an eighth victory in the Dewhurst. Brian Meehan's unbeaten juvenile, Isaac Shelby takes his chance. Glorious Goodwood winners, Royal Scotsman and Marbaan round off the entries for this historic Group One.

I was surprised to see Nostrum's name feature in the confirmed field on Thursday. Sir Michael Stoute likes to take the softly, softly approach with his best juveniles. It's been 35 years since Ajdal handed Stoute his only previous win in the Dewhurst, but there's no doubt that Nostrum has the natural ability to win a race of this stature.

That being said, there are a couple of runners who've achieved similar, if not more impressive results than the market leader and they can all be backed at much more appealing prices. Chaldean and Aesop's Fables have both won Group Twos by two lengths. Either would be worthy winners of this Group One.

I do feel that NAVAL POWER has been slightly overlooked, despite winning all of his four starts to date. For me, his seven-length victory in the Pat Eddery Stakes remains one of the most outstanding juvenile performances of the season.

Charlie Appleby's star then won another Listed prize at Haydock. The 1/3 favourite took a while to get going over a mile that day, hitting the front just in time to scrape a mere one-and-a-quarter length victory over a vastly inferior field.

Had Appleby decided to head straight to the Dewhurst after Ascot, I feel that Naval Power would be rivalling Nostrum for favouritism. It seems that workman-like performance at Haydock has put plenty of punters and bookmakers off.

Not me, though. I remain confident that Naval Power is one of the best juveniles around at the moment, so I'll happily snap up 7/2 while it lasts.
