2018 July Cup Betting Preview & Tips

Some of the UK's best sprinters will do battle at Newmarket on July 14 when they line up in the Group 1 July Cup.

Merchant Navy has been withdrawn from the race but the field still includes the likes of Blue Point, Harry Angel and U S Navy Flag. All three thoroughbreds have good experience winning on the big stage and are more than capable of taking out one of the UK's biggest sprinting races.

2018 July Cup Best Bet - Blue Point

Blue Point burst onto the scene by winning the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot this year and that win showed his class. The Charlie Appleby-trained four-year-old scored by just under two lengths in a dominant display and he will look to continue that form at Newmarket.

The Godolphin operation is firing on all cylinders this season and the son of Shamardal looks set to continue his impressive form. Prior to the Royal Ascot Festival, Blue Point had five wins from 12 starts and despite finishing last of nine runners in the Chairman's Sprint Prize in Hong Kong, he has rebounded nicely.

Bookmakers have Blue Point at 4.50 and that's a good price given his recent outing.

2018 July Cup Each Way Tip - U S Navy Flag

U S Navy Flag finished well down the track in the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes last month but we're prepared to forgive the three-year-old and go on his Newmarket form. The son of War Front has won his last two starts at Newmarket, including a win in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes in 2017.

He has yet to win since October last year but he just needs a boost in confidence and that could come on a familiar track. His best form clearly comes at Newmarket and we're predicting a return to form for the quality Aidan O'Brien-trained runner.

6.00 with bookmakers is a good each way price.

2018 July Cup Roughie Tip - Redkirk Warrior

Australian runner Redkirk Warrior was disappointing in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes behind Merchant Navy but the undulating track wouldn't have helped his chances. The seven-year-old is lethal running down a flat and straight surface and his best Australian form would take him close here.

Originally from the UK, Redkirk Warrior is a multiple Group 1 winner in Australia and we're prepared to give him another chance. His odds of 12.00 are too good to pass up.
