Saturday's card at Newmarket may feature two prestigious Group Ones, but the main event on the card is undoubtedly the namesake race of the meeting, the Cambridgeshire Handicap. This nine-furlong handicap was first held on the Rowley Mile way back in 1839, and a field of 35 talented handicappers will contest Saturday's renewal.

We've taken a look through the odds and listed some key trends for the Cambridgeshire, before picking out our best ITV Racing tips.

2021 Cambridgeshire Handicap Trends

  • 14 of the last 15 winners were three, four or five year's old
  • 13 of the last 15 winners ran within the last six weeks
  • 12 of the last 15 winners were rated between 94 and 104
  • 11 of the last 15 winners had won that season
  • 11 of the last 15 winners finished fourth or better last time out
  • 11 of the last 15 winners carried between 8-07 and 9-02
  • 10 of the last 15 winners had previously won over 1m2f
  • 10 of the last 15 winners ran in a Class Two Handicap last time out
  • 10 of the last 15 winners returned an SP of 11/1 or longer
  • 10 of the last 15 winners were drawn in stall 15 or wider

As the final trend suggests, a high draw is massively beneficial in the Cambridgeshire. Along with 10 of the last 15 winners, 66% of the top four placers in that time have come from stall 15 or wider.

10 of the top 13 in the betting have come out of the draw well. Those who've joined the big gamble on Chichester, though, will not be too pleased, after Keith Dalgleish's four-year-old was placed in stall ten.

John Gosden and Frankie Dettori have teamed up to win the Cambridgeshire twice in the last three years, winning with two progressive three-year-olds in Wissahickon and Lord North. Another Gosden three-year-old, Uncle Bryn tops the betting. However, Frankie has chosen to ride Magical Morning, who sits right at the top of the weights - a decision which must put a black mark next to the favourite's name.

2021 Cambridgeshire Handicap Tip 1 - Anmaat

Owen Burrows said this week that, now his partnership with Shadwell is coming to an end, that he'll hard try to advertise his training credentials during the rest of the season. What better way to do that than to send out the winner of the Cambridgeshire, and ANMAAT clearly has a very good chance.

Once raced as a juvenile, this Awtaad gelding opened his account at the first time of asking in 2021, scoring in a maiden at Lingfield. Following a couple of narrow defeats, Anmaat wheeled away from some decent rivals to win a Class Three Handicap at Bath by almost four lengths.

Burrow's charge locked horns with a previously unbeaten four-year-old of John Gosden's, Faisal last time out at Doncaster. William Buick, who was deputising for the injured Jim Crowley, gave Awtaad a confident ride, and there was nothing Faisal could do to stop Burrow's three-year-old from claiming a comfortable victory.

Awtaad likes to be ridden prominently, a trait I like in large-field handicaps, and he's utilised a smart turn-of-foot to win well on both his most recent starts. Crowley's mount will have no problem dropping back to nine furlongs and Awtaad is two pounds well-in at the weights.

2021 Cambridgeshire Handicap Tip 2 - Irish Admiral

I'm also going to have another bet on the talented IRISH ADMIRAL, who I've backed a number of times this season and gained little in the way of return.

Having watched William Haggas' charge travel beautifully in a really competitive handicap at York before running out of steam in the closing stages, I NAP'd Irish Admiral when he ran at Epsom. Tom Marquand's mount was disappointing that day, losing out by a good seven lengths, before labouring home fifth in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot.

Again, I fancied Irish Admiral to run well at an each-way price in the Clipper Logistics Handicap during the Ebor Festival, and William Buick's mount could only finish eighth. I then left Haggas' four-year-old well alone when he turned up at Redcar nine days later, and Irish Admiral duly hacked up, beating a talented field by a cosy two lengths.

Despite the ease in which he saw off some highly-rated rivals, the handicapper has only upped Irish Admiral four pounds to 97. This intermediate trip should really suit Tom Marquand's mount and he could run a big race after drawing stall 15.
