Cheveley Park Stakes History
First held at Newmarket in 1899, the Cheveley Park Stakes has become one of the most important races on the flat race calendar.
Staged over six furlongs on the Rowley Mile, the race is only open to fillies. Many of the fillies who take part in the Cheveley Park Stakes go on to run in the 1000 Guineas the following season.
In 1903, Pretty Polly achieved a quite outstanding feat, winning the Cheveley Park Stakes and the Middle Park Stakes in the same season. Peter Gilpin's superstar would go on to complete the Triple Crown in 1904, and remains one of the finest horses ever to grace the sport.
Scuttle, Brown Betty and Fleet would all emulate Pretty Polly by following up in the 1000 Guineas after winning the Cheveley Park Stakes. The most recent horse to complete the double was Special Duty, who scored in 2009 and '10.
Bayuda would win the Cheveley Park in 1918, before winning the Oaks at Epsom the following season. That double was matched by Light Brocade in 1933.
Gordon Richards is the most successful jockey in the history of the Cheveley Park. Richard rode the winner nine times during his career, with his final win coming on Sixpence in 1953.
Irish trainers celebrated success in the Cheveley Park during the 1970s and 80s, with Dermot Weld, Jim Bolger and Vincent O'Brien all celebrating victories.
Two trainers have managed to saddle four winners of the Cheveley Park Stakes. Alec Taylor Jnr, who's wins came between 1908 and '24, and Criquette Head-Maarek, who's fourth and final winner was Special Duty in 2009.
Richard Hannon Jnr celebrated a surprise win with Tiggy Wiggy in 2014, the year before Mark Johnston won for the first time with Lumiere.
Aidan O'Brien than collected a hat-trick of victories between 2016 and '18, as Brave Anna, Clemmie and Fairyland came out on top.
Jessica Harrington then lifted the Cheveley Park Stakes trophy for the first time in 2019, as Millisle got up to beat Raffle Prize on the Rowley Mile.
Andrew Balding was celebrating in 2020, as Alcohol Free held off favourite Miss Amulet to win the Cheveley Park Stakes. Aidan O'Brien then saddled his fourth winner of this Group One in the last six years, when the previously once-raced Tenebrism bolted up at Newmarket.
