2021 Royal Ascot Day Five Tips

Race 1 - Chesham Stakes Tips

Great Max E/W2:30pm Chesham Stakes (Listed Race) 7fGET 16/1 HERE

Aidan O'Brien was very bullish about Point Lonsdale's chances during his Royal Ascot stable tour at the start of the week, which caused the bookies to cut Ryan Moore's mount into a very short price. That was before the rains came, however, and Australia's progeny don't tend to produce their best on juicy turf.

One who I fancy will deal with conditions is GREAT MAX, who shaped like seven furlongs would really suit when winning a decent little race at Newbury. Michael Bell's colt is by Wootton Bassett and out of a Youmzain mare, so there are plenty of pointers in his pedigree that suggest soft ground may bring about the required improvement.

Race 2 - Jersey Stakes Tips

I haven't backed one of Her Majesty, The Queen's horses yet this week. That's about to change, as I fancy LIGHT REFRAIN could out-run her odds in this open, high-quality renewal.

William Haggas' filly has been impressing over six furlongs in recent starts, winning a Listed race at Nottingham before finishing a one-length fourth behind Rohaan, Dragon Symbol and Umm Kulthumm in the Group Two Sandy Lane Stakes, run on heavy ground at Haydock.

Light Refrain is by Frankel and out of a mare who won a Listed race over seven furlongs. Tom Marquand's mount also acquitted herself very well in a couple of classy maidens over this distance, so this seems an ideal opportunity to step Light Refrain back up in distance, and there are no worries about the ground with her.

Race 3 - Hardwicke Stakes Tips

Wonderful Tonight has course-and-distance form on soft ground in the book, so it's no surprise to see the support for David Menuisier's filly. Ilaraab looks the type who will deal with conditions too, but the one I feel has been overlooked here is ALBAFLORA.

Ralph Beckett's mare was beaten just a head by the St Leger runner-up here at Ascot last season, and thrashed a future Group Three winner by seven lengths when winning the Buckhounds Stakes on her reappearance over course-and-distance. Albaflora was then backed when the rain arrived ahead of the Coronation Cup at Epsom, but she didn't seem to handle the track that day, hanging left down the hill as Pyledriver and Al Aasy fought out the finish.

James Doyle's mount will relish the return to Ascot and she's a known lover of very soft ground. If this race hasn't come around too quickly after that Group One at Epsom, then Albaflora can make her presence felt.

Race 4 - Diamond Jubilee Stakes Tips

FRESH got the better of Pendleton when they met here at Ascot back in May. James Fanshawe's four-year-old was giving his rival a pound that day, and Fresh will now be getting four pounds from the second-favourite after Pendleton won at York. Keiran Shoemark's mount handles Ascot well and doesn't mind some extra give in the ground. He remains a progressive sprinter to keep on-side.

Barbill E/W5:00pm Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 6fGET 40/1 HERE

I'm also going to take a punt on BARBILL, who hasn't been at his best on his last two starts. Mick Channon's five-year-old has now dropped down to a mark that's one-pound below his last winning rating, and he does boast winning form on genuinely soft ground. They will be my two against the field.

Race 6 - Golden Gates Stakes Tips

Alfaadhel5:35pm Golden Gates Stakes (Handicap) 1m2fGET 5/1 HERE

ALFAADHEL followed up a snug victory at Chester with a mightly impressive win at Lingfield, where Roger Varian's charge picked off Sir Rumi as easily as he liked to win by two lengths. Jim Crowley's mount now makes his handicap debut off 98, but he remains open to any amount of progression and I'm finding it hard to side against him.

Foxes Tales E/W5:35pm Golden Gates Stakes (Handicap) 1m2fGET 12/1 HERE

As there could be as many as five paid places available, I'm also going to back FOXES TALES, who actually beat Alfaadhel when the favourite made his debut at Newbury. I then backed Foxes Tales for the Dee Stakes and Andrew Balding's colt was heavily punted on the day. Sadly, Foxes Tales never looked comfortable on that tight, turning track, but he'll be much more at home at Ascot and I'm confident he will deal with softer going.

Race 7 - Queen Alexandra Stakes Tips

Stratum6:10pm Ascot Queen Alexandra Stakes (Class 2) 2m5½fGET 5/1 HERE
New customers only. 18+ T&Cs and wagering requirements apply.

There's rarely an upset in the Queen Alexandra Stakes. 11 of the last 15 winners have gone off at 6/1 or shorter, so I'm going to keep it simple and back STRATUM.

Willie Mullins' eight-year-old won the Cesarewitch on soft ground back in 2018. Stratum won very well at Gowran Park on his reappearance this term and was only beaten seven lengths in a Group Three over 14 furlongs at Navan last time out. This represents a big drop in class and Ryan Moore's mount is the highest-rated in this field. He'll be my final Royal Ascot tip.
