Juddmonte International Stakes History
The International Stakes was devised in 1972 where Roberto became the first and last horse to beat Brigadier Gerard.
Formerly known as the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup, the sponsorship has since been taken over by Juddmonte Farms and it can be referred to as the Juddmonte International.
Held on the first day of the Ebor Festival at York, the International Stakes might not have a lengthy history, but there have been some supreme winners.
Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O'Brien have five wins each and Frankie Dettori has ridden five winners, most recently in 2007 with Authorized.
Frankel stretched his record to 13 wins from 13 starts when winning in 2012 and Sea the Stars won in 2009, the same year it won six Group 1 races, including the 2000 Guineas, Derby and Prix de L'arc de Triomphe.
Three-year-olds have beaten their elders in this Group One in four of the past six years, with Australia and Roaring Lion featuring amongst the recent winners.
Japan struck another blow for the Classic generation in 2019, holding off Crystal Ocean to win his second Group One of the season.
Ghaiyyath then made all to beat Magical and Lord North and win the 2020 Juddmonte International Stakes.
For the most part the International Stakes is taken out by the well-backed runners, but there is the odd upset.
Arabian Queen shocked punters in 2015 when winning at 50/1. The three-year-old carried a low rating into the race but was good enough to beat a quality field.
That was the only double-figure winner in the last 12 years, which has included a range of short-priced favourites.
Frankel remained unbeaten at odds of 1/10 and Duke of Marmalade (4/6), Rip Van Winkle (7/4) and Australia (8/13) justified their short quotes.
The higher the rating, the better they perform. Only Arabian Queen carried a rating lower than 110 and 10 of the last 12 winners have been rated above 120, so look for those ratings when placing a bet.
Only one winner since 2006 hasn't won that season before taking out the International Stakes. Rip Van Winkle hadn't won its first two starts that season, but punters were confident in its chances.
Duke of Marmalade, Frankel, Postponed and Sea the Stars had all won at least three races that season before winning the International Stakes.
