Three Group One races will take place in the US on Saturday evening. The most prestigious of the three is the Haskell Stakes, and victory in this ten-furlong contest guarantees the winner a spot in the Breeders' Cup Classic at the end of the season.

2023 Haskell Stakes Runners

Kentucky Derby winner, Mage makes his first start since that third-place finish in the Preakness Stakes. Gustavo Delgado's Classic winner tackles a familiar foe in Tapit Trice, who followed a disappointing run in the Kentucky Derby with a decent third in the Belmont Stakes over a mile-and-a-half.

Bob Baffert's hopes for a tenth Haskell Stakes victory lie with expensive purchase Arabian Knight, who hasn't been seen since an effortless victory in the Southwest Stakes back in January. Brad Cox, winner of the last two Haskells, will be represented by recent Pegasus Stakes winner Salute The Stars.

Steve Asmussen and Tyler Gaffalione team up with the lightly-raced Extra Anejo. Mike Smith partners Geaux Rocket Ride for Richard Mandella. Awesome Strong and Howgreatisnate complete the Haskell Stakes field.

2023 Haskell Stakes Tips

Arabian Knight is of great interest on his return from an enforced lay-off. John Velazquez will be keen to get off to a good start from the widest stall of all and if Bob Baffert's three-year-old was to make all and win, it wouldn't be a great surprise.

That being said, I would still rather side with the proven quality of MAGE, who wasn't seen to best effect in the Preakness Stakes.

Gustavo Delgado's star went into the second leg of the Triple Crown on the back of that Kentucky Derby win just three weeks previous and a hard tussle with Forte in the Florida Derby. Those races, combined with the quick turnaround, clearly took their toll on Mage, who looked a little flat as he finished two lengths adrift of National Treasure and Blazing Sevens.

After a busy first half of the campaign, Delgado has freshened his stable star up and a central draw in stall four should be ideal. If Castellano can keep tabs on Arabian Knight through the early stages and not give the likely leader too much rope, then I fancy Mage will be too strong for his rivals down the stretch.
