The third and final leg of the US Triple Crown takes place on Saturday, as a stellar cast lines up in the Belmont Stakes. Many of US horse racing's most famous names have won this race down the years, and a top-quality field looks set to fight it out in the 2021 renewal.

Essential Quality's unbeaten run came to an end in the Kentucky Derby. Brad Cox's charge - who had won his first five career starts - moved into contention from the rear, but couldn't find the extra gear to pass the leaders, crossing the line a little one-paced back in fourth.

Luiz Saez's mount made his debut over six furlongs, and hasn't looked as effective since stepping up beyond a mile. His performance in the Kentucky Derby, plus his breeding, makes me think he could struggle over this extended trip of 12 furlongs.

Rombauer was my selection in the Preakness Stakes, so I was delighted to see Michael McCarthy's mount power to victory under Flavien Prat. John Velazquez takes the ride today, but he too seems a little too quick for this middle-distance, and could struggle to see out this distance.

Prat will this time partner Hot Rod Charlie, who couldn't get past Medina Spirit and Mandaloun when third in the Kentucky Derby. Doug O'Neill's three-year-old is by a former runner-up in the Belmont Stakes in Oxbow, and there is stamina in the dam's side of his breeding too.

Rock Your World saw his unbeaten record come crashing down in the Kentucky Derby, where he finished with just two horses behind him. Joel Rosario's mount got off to a terrible start that day, and he was facing an uphill task just to get involved in the race from there. Rock Your World thrashed Medina Spirit when they met in the Santa Anita Derby, so he's clearly much better than that performance at Churchill Downs suggests.

Like Hot Rod Charlie, Known Agenda was sired by a former Belmont second in Curlin, who was beaten a head in the 2007 renewal of this great race. Todd Pletcher's Florida Derby winner finished ninth in the Kentucky Derby, but could improve for this step up in distance.

As could Bourbonic, whose dam was sired by by 2005 Belmont Stakes winner, Afleet Alex. Todd Pletcher's second-string finished four places behind his stablemate in the Kentucky Derby, but showed when winning the Wood Memorial that he could perform on the big stage.

Pletcher's third runner in the race, Overtook will come out of stall eight. Japanese raider France Go De Ina, who was beaten 17-lengths on his US debut in the Preakness Stakes, rounds off the field.

Todd Pletcher knows what it takes to win this Classic, having saddled the victor in 2007, 2013 and 2017. In KNOWN AGENDA, he has a proven Group One winner who remains open to improvement over this sort of distance, so I fancy backing Irad Ortiz's mount at a tempting price of 7/1.

Known Agenda broke well in the Kentucky Derby which he had to do from stall one. However, as the fast starters from the outside stalls descended towards the rail, Known Agenda was shuffled all the way back to the rear of the field. From there, Ortiz had no real hope of winning, staying on down the stretch to grab ninth place.

Curlin saw out this trip well in his Belmont Stakes, and several of his progeny have gone on to place in this Group One, including Vino Rosso, Keen Ice and Irish War Cry. From stall six, Ortiz - who won this race on a hold-up horse in 2016 - will be able to ride the race however he likes from stall six and three of Pletcher's last six runners around this track have all won.

With stamina question marks beside many of those ahead of him in the market, this looks a good opportunity for Florida Derby winner Known Agenda to hand Todd Pletcher his fourth Belmont Stakes victory.
