Confirmed runners for the 2023 Kentucky Derby on May 6th

The final field has been confirmed for the 2023 Kentucky Derby, with the draw taking place at Churchill Downs earlier this week.

2023 Kentucky Derby Runners

A low draw is generally preferred when it comes to the Kentucky Derby. Over the last 90 years, almost 75% of the winners of this Classic came from stall ten or lower.

Supporters of this year's favourite, Forte, will have been disappointed to see Todd Pletcher's star placed out in stall 15. Several horses have won from that stall, including 2020 champion Authentic, so I doubt Irad Ortiz Jnr will be too concerned.

Stall 17 has never housed a Kentucky Derby winner and the horse drawn in that unlucky stall this year is Japanese raider Derma Sotogake. In contrast, gate 10 has produced more winners than any other and it'll be the current second-favourite, Tapit Trice who springs from that stall on Saturday night.

Kingsbarns, Mage, Skinner and Practical Move will all be happy with their draws, having been placed between stalls six and ten. Angel Of Empire was drawn wide in stall 14, with the second Japanese raider, Continuar drawing the widest gate of all, stall 20.

Rich Strike was the first reserve for last year's Kentucky Derby and managed to claim a shock victory from stall 20. The three reserves this year are Cyclone Mischief, Mandarin Hero and King Russell.
