2025 Cambridgeshire Tips - 25/1 ante-post selection for huge Newmarket handicap
Real Gain has emerged as a compelling early pick for the 2025 Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket, currently trading at an appealing 25/1. Backed by a strong course-and-distance win in 2023, Real Gain bounced back from a year-long absence with a solid run at Glorious Goodwood. Despite tough previous competitions and some missed targets, the gelding’s latest performance suggests he is underestimated. If confirmed for the race, his odds are likely to shorten, so early backers may gain significant value.

The big betting race at Newmarket next Saturday is the Cambridgeshire Handicap. The last two runnings of this nine-furlong Heritage Handicap have gone the way of the top-weights, and we've seen 20/1, 25/1 and two 40/1 winners in the last five years alone.
Today, I've taken a look through the ante-post betting for next Saturday's Cambridgeshire and picked out a contender who could turn out to be overpriced.
2025 Cambridgeshire Handicap - Real Gain
The Cambridgeshire would have sprung into Richard Hughes' mind when REAL GAIN (25/1 bet365) hacked up in the Class 3 course-and-distance handicap at this meeting in 2023. Hughes' gelding was having just his fourth career start that day, and proceeded to flatten some half-decent rivals off an opening handicap mark of 91.
Real Gain then took his chance in the Darley Stakes that October, but struggled a little against his older rivals. Finley Marsh's mount disappointed in his comeback at Newbury the following April, and went on to run poorly in big handicaps at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood.
Despite those defeats, Real Gain was still the 12/1 ante-post favourite for last year's Cambridgeshire. However, Hughes decided to scratch his star from his seasonal target at the seven-day declaration stage, stating that he "wasn't happy with his work", and Real Gain wasn't seen again until Glorious Goodwood last month.
Despite a year-long absence, James Doyle's mount ran a screamer in the Golden Mile. Real Gain was up with the pace throughout, and only course specialist Rhoscolyn and the in-form Ebt's Guard were able to pass Hughes' returning star in the closing stages.
Fifth Column, Greek Order and Tribal Chief all sit towards the head of the market for next Saturday's big handicap, but all three finished behind Real Gain at Goodwood. Hughes hasn't entered his five-year-old in any other race since then, and if Real Gain is finally confirmed in the Cambridgeshire field, I expect he'll go off at a much shorter price than 25/1.
