One of the most important handicaps in National Hunt racing takes place at Newbury on Saturday, as a field of top chasers takes part in the Coral Gold Cup. Formerly known as the Hennessy and the Ladbrokes Trophy, this three-mile-two-contest has been won by many of the sport's best chasers, including One Man, Denman. Burrough Hill Lad and two-time winner, Arkle.

2025 Coral Gold Cup Ante-Post Tip - The Doyen Chief
Having shown a decent level of ability over hurdles, THE DOYEN CHIEF (16/1) improved greatly for fences last term, ending his novice campaign with two Class 2 victories.
Alan King's eight-year-old thrashed a decent field at Kempton in March, and followed up at Warwick 12 days later. Tom Cannon's mount didn't jump as fluently as he had done at Kempton, but stayed strong in the closing stages to repel two classy runners for Dan Skelton - who had his horses fit and firing, as he attempted to fend off Willie Mullins in the trainer's championship.
King's eight-year-old travelled beautifully throughout his reappearance at Bangor. The Doyen Chief made a slight error at the fourth-last, but cantered into the lead approaching the final flight - only to make another blunder, which resulted in Tom Bellamy losing an iron, and allowed chasing debutante Deep Cave to claim a narrow win.
Despite failing to claim victory that day, King will have been delighted with that reappearance effort, and defeat ensured The Doyen Chief would enter the Coral Gold Cup at the bottom of the weights. There's every chance that this strong traveller will improve again for this step up to three-and-a-quarter miles, and both of his wins last spring came on decent ground.
2025 Coral Gold Cup Tip 2 - Katate Dori
When picking out my 20 To Follow at the start of the season, I said that Sam Thomas would be eyeing a big handicap chase for KATATE DORI (12/1).
Katate Dori romped to a 12-length triumph on his chasing debut at Exeter, before another easy win at Chepstow. Thomas' star went into the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival on the back of a 15-length triumph in the Grade Three Ladbrokes Trophy Handicap Chase at Kempton, but - like many - was caught flat-footed by the flag start and failed to get involved.
Thomas' stable has started the season in flying form, with many winning big races first time out. Despite that, Thomas sent Katate Dori to Aintree for a prep-run over hurdles three weeks ago, where Dylan Johnston's mount travelled OK, but got outpaced down the home straight.
Hurdling has never been Katate Dori's game, so I'm happy to put a line through that effort and presume the run will have teed him up perfectly for Newbury. Thomas rode Denman to the first of his two wins in this historic handicap, and he'd love to get his name on the honours board at Newbury again.
