One of the biggest handicap races staged in Europe takes place on day four of York's Ebor Festival, as 22 talented stayers take part in the Ebor Handicap. This contest was first run on the Knavesmire in the 1840s and legendary names like Lily Agnes, Brown Jack, Sea Pigeon and Further Flight feature on the glittering roll of honour.

I've taken a look through the betting for the Ebor Handicap, listed some key recurring trends and picked out my best betting tips.

Tarriance has been backed into favouritism for this Saturday's Ebor. Andrew Balding's gelding won the Melrose Handicap at this meeting 12 months ago and, after running mainly in Group races since then, caught the eye when finishing fourth behind Hopewell Rock in the Summer Handicap at Goodwood.

Five of the last seven renewals of this great race have been won by Irish raiders. Ryan Moore rides the well-backed Emit for Joseph O'Brien. Willie Mullins runs two in his quest for a third Ebor, with William Buick opting to ride German recruit Love Me Tender.

2026 Ebor Handicap Tip 1 - Mr Hollywood

Since 2018, only Trawlerman has carried less than 9-5 to victory in the Ebor. It's become a handicap for the class horses in the field, and an RPR in excess of 110 will likely be required to claim victory.

MR HOLLYWOOD (12/1) produced plenty of Ebor-worthy performances during his time in Germany. Willie Mullins' charge placed in several Group Ones as a three-year-old, ran in the 2024 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and opened his four-year-old campaign with a Listed win over multiple Group One winner Fantastic Moon.

A move to France followed in 2025, where Mr Hollywood continued his consistent form, winning a conditions race at Toulouse after a string of placed efforts in similar events. Mullins' recruit could only finish third on his stable debut over hurdles at Killarney in May, but ran a lovely race when beaten only three lengths behind Illinois in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot, and did well to win over hurdles at Galway at the end of last month.

The fact that they crawled around for most of the Queen Alexandra suited Mr Hollywood, who hasn't raced over 12 furlongs before in his Flat career. This drop back in trip should suit, Mr Hollywood has landed a lovely draw up in stall 20, and Saffie Osborne - who has been riding as well as most this season - comes in for the ride.

2026 Ebor Handicap Tip 2 - Paddy The Squire

Another contender who looks to have landed a favourable draw is PADDY THE SQUIRE (25/1). Iain Jardine is no stranger to Ebor success, having won this historic handicap with Nakeeta in 2017, and I'm sure he'll have had both eyes fixed on York after his stable star ran so well at Royal Ascot.

This six-year-old son of Golden Horn has progressed smoothly as he's got older. Paddy The Squire won three of his six starts last term and, after a pipe-opener in the Jorvik Handicap here at York on his return, powered home along the rail to finish a two-length third behind Daiquiri Bay and Gamrai in the Copper Horse Handicap at the Royal meeting.

Paddy The Squire was last seen finishing a very close second to Sportingsilvermine in a mile-and-a-half handicap at Newmarket in July. Like in the Jorvik, Jardine's star took a little too long to get rolling over this middle distance, but managed to push Sportingsilvermine all the way to the line, despite giving the winner more than a stone at the weights.

Stepping back up in distance should really suit Andrew Mullen's mount, and Paddy The Squire is proven on all kinds of ground. Recent performances suggest that this mark of 104 might not be beyond him, and the cheekpieces that went on for the first time at Royal Ascot remain in place.
