Glorious Goodwood Day 1 Tips

1:50pm Goodwood - Chesterfield Cup Handicap Tips

11 of the last 14 renewals of our Festival opener have been won by four-year-olds, so it seems sensible to side with the youngsters. PAROLE D'ORO (25/1) is one of the least-fancied four-year-olds in the field, but there's plenty to suggest that Michael Bell's gelding will outrun his odds.

Parole d'Oro is yet to win a handicap, but has gone close in several high-profile assignments. Bell's charge was touched off at the July Festival last season, and on his final three-year-old outing at York. Parole d'Oro then bumped into an out-and-out Ripon specialist in Spioradalta on his second start of this season, and acquitted himself well when fourth over a mile at the July Festival earlier this month.

Hector Crouch's mount travelled well, but didn't have the finishing speed to challenge some strong milers that day, and the form of that Newmarket handicap has been boosted significantly since. Parole d'Oro struggled from a stinker of a draw at Glorious Goodwood last season, but Bell's charge is much better drawn today, and stepping back up to ten furlongs seems sure to suit.

2:25pm Goodwood - Vintage Stakes Tips

Al Hudaiba will carry a penalty into our opening juvenile race of the week, having struck in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket. The Coles, however, have always had a strong affinity with Goodwood, and I'm going to take the market leader on with the unbeaten DR RASCAL (9/1).

Cole's youngster won nicely on his racecourse debut at Leicester, despite racing like he already wanted a mile. Dr Rascal managed to get loose before his second outing at Ascot earlier this month, but still managed to tank his way through the contest and sprint clear of favourite Rising Tiger in the closing stages.

This is a decent leap in class compared to the two maidens that Dr Rascal has contested so far. Yet, Cole's quirky sort took a huge step forward between his first and second runs, and this son of Sottsass looks to have enough quality to challenge the more fancied runners.

3:00pm Goodwood - Lennox Stakes Tips

Witness Stand benefited greatly from sitting behind a rapid pace when he struck in this race 12 months ago. Lake Forest, on the other hand, was given far too much to do, and Cieren Fallon will be keen not to make the same mistake as last year, given front-runners Qirat and Poet Master feature in this year's field.

MARVELMAN (6/1) should be well suited by the set-up of this contest. Andrew Balding's four-year-old romped to a tremendous victory in the Group Two Park Stakes at Doncaster last season, before coming up short in the QEII and the 1351 Turf Sprint out in Saudi Arabia over the winter.

PJ McDonald's mount dropped down to six furlongs for his seasonal return in the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle, and ran a lovely race to finish second to the dangerous Padorus, who was getting five pounds from the runner-up at the weights. Marvelman is at his best over this seven-furlong trip, and Balding's star has already proven himself at Group Two level.

4:10pm Goodwood - Shaker Handicap Tips

The inaugural running of this sprint handicap was won by a 28/1 outsider last season, so I'm quite happy to take a swing on TATTERSTALL (16/1) at a healthy price. Michael Dods' star won the 3YO Dash at Epsom in 2023, and won here at Goodwood the following season, before missing most of 2025 through injury.

Tatterstall returned in the spring with narrow defeats at Thirsk and Hamilton. Connor Beasley's mount was fifth behind Twilight Calls at Newmarket last time out, but Tatterstall was forced to carry top weight of 9-12 that day, and Dods' course winner will shoulder just 8-11 in this large-field handicap.

4:45pm Goodwood - Maiden Stakes Tips

A hugely competitive maiden, and I fancy DORIGO (10/1) has been underestimated. Kevin Ryan's juvenile wasn't beaten far on debut by Big Cigar, who has subsequently followed up in a good handicap at York, and the fourth and fifth from that maiden have boosted the form since.

Kevin Stott's mount then ran a cracker from a low draw in the Windsor Castle Stakes, where he crossed the line seventh, finishing second to Sale Shark on his side of the track. Dorigo proved that day that he didn't have to make the running, and Kevin Ryan's youngster should get a nice toe into the race on Tuesday. Dorigo seems capable of another big performance.

5:20pm Goodwood - Fillies' Handicap Tips

Another handicap where I'll be siding with the younger generation, as three-year-olds have won all ten editions of this one-mile contest. Annastarzy and Crazee Icon bring winning form to the table, but I fancy a punt on WID (7/1), in the hope that a wide draw won't prove too detrimental.

Ralph Beckett's filly was too keen on debut at Doncaster, but ran really well on her second maiden start at Ffos Las, finishing a clear second behind odds-on favourite English Time. Wid then opened her account with a front-running success at Carlisle, winning comfortably under Jason Hart.

Eddie Greatrex gets his chance aboard Wid on Tuesday evening, and I expect he'll ride this strong stayer confidently again. This opening handicap mark of 80 could prove to be rather lenient.

5:55pm Goodwood - Fillies' Handicap Tips

Tuesday's card closes with another competitive handicap. I'm surprised to see SING THE BLUES (16/1) sitting so far down the betting, considering how well she won on debut for Martin Dunne.

Sing The Blues moved to Dunne's stable having won one of her four starts for William Haggas last term. Cieren Fallon held his mount up out the back on her stable debut at Newmarket 11 days ago, where Sing The Blues moved smoothly into contention at the two pole before kicking a length clear of Shallow and Powdering late on.

Dunne's recruit won her maiden here at Goodwood last October, and remains on a decent mark of 85. I could see her challenging again from a favourable draw in stall seven.
