Saturday's card at Newbury features two Classic trials, with plenty of Guineas hopefuls entered in both the Fred Darling and Greenham Stakes. The third Group Three on the card is the John Porter Stakes, which provides some of the top middle-distance horses with an ideal starting point.

2026 John Porter Stakes Runners

Constitution Hill will not make his flat turf debut this weekend, but we've got a quality line-up for this Group Three nonetheless. Karl Burke's Group Two winner Convergent leads the betting, ahead of last year's Dante and Great Voltigeur winner, Pride Of Arras.

Al Aasy returns as a nine-year-old, having won the Gordon Richards Stakes and the Glorious Stakes last season. Ryan Moore rides Lion's Pride for John and Thady Gosden. William Buick jumps into the saddle of George Scott's seven-year-old Phantom Flight.

Oisin Murphy and Andrew Balding combine with Jockey Club Stakes winner Bellum Justum. William Haggas' four-year-old Tenability completes the field.

2026 John Porter Stakes Tips

Convergent looks set to progress further in 2026, having enjoyed an excellent three-year-old campaign. Karl Burke's star has a Group Two-winners penalty to contend with, but the team will be expecting a victory if they're looking at entering Group One company in the near future.

The booking of Ryan Moore makes LION'S PRIDE (13/2) a very interesting contender. John and Thady Gosden's grey has had his problems, but showed his true colours with a rampant performance in the Jockey Club Stakes last September, clocking an RPR of 117 during that seven-length romp.

Lion's Pride has run twice out in the UAE since that Listed win. Rab Havlin's mount got a little outpaced when fifth behind Royal Champion in the Bahrain International Trophy. Lion's Pride travelled much better in the 12-furlong H.H The Amir Trophy, but was forced to take a wide path around the final bend as he tried to challenge the leaders. That manoeuvre ultimately proved costly, as it allowed Deep Monster and Goliath - who hugged the rail throughout - to move on and battle for the victory.

Moore's mount still ran up to a good level that day, and this represents a decent drop in quality. Lion's Pride has a good record in the back of a break, and the Gosdens have started this season in strong form.
