For the second year in a row, Coko Beach will carry top-weight into the Becher. Gordon Elliott's grey ran a screamer when second to Chambard and Coko Beach returns to Aintree rated three pounds lower than 12 months ago.
Coko Beach's lofty rating meant that five of the 12 runners last year raced from outside of the handicap, and the same will happen on Saturday. Current favourite, King Turgeon will run off his actual rating, but the fancied Gaboriot will be carrying three pounds more than he should, meaning he'll only be getting two pounds from his market rival.
2024 Becher Chase Ante-Post Tips - Iron Bridge
The late Trevor Hemmings loved to have winners at Aintree, especially around the Grand National course. His colours will be carried into battle on Saturday by IRON BRIDGE (10/1), who performed with great credit in two major staying handicaps last season.
Jonjo & AJ O'Neill's eight-year-old won the fight for second place behind the imperious Nassalam in the Welsh Grand National. Iron Bridge then plugged on gamely to finish third in the Grand National Trial at Haydock, where he was giving plenty of weight to the two in-form rivals, Yeah Man and My Silver Lining, who finished ahead of him.
That effort at Haydock clearly took its toll, as Iron Bridge was well below his best in both the Midlands and Scottish Nationals in the spring. Jonjo Jnr's mount was forced to carry 12-1 on his return to action at Carlisle in November, but ran another solid race to place third behind Val Dancer and Snipe.
The O'Neill's had planned to run Iron Bridge in the Coral Gold Cup last week, but the ground came up a little too quick. Conditions at Aintree should be much more suitable and Iron Bridge has been dropped to a lovely low mark of 136, meaning he'll shoulder just 10-5 in Saturday's feature at Aintree.
Verdict
Iron Bridge is the sort of strong-staying type who will relish the challenges of the National course. He'll be my ante-post selection at 10/1.
