2025 King George Qatar Stakes Runners
Topping the market for this quality renewal of the King George is last year's King Charles III winner, Asfoora. Henry Dwyer's Aussie raider was beaten a short-head by Big Evs in this race 12 months ago, and returns to Goodwood on the back of a two-length fifth when attempting to defend her King Charles crown at Royal Ascot.
Mick Appleby's hopes of back-to-back wins rest on the shoulders of Big Mojo, who drops down to the minimum distance after a narrow defeat in the July Cup. Harry Eustace's Time For Sandals claimed a shock victory in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, and will carry a Group One-winners penalty as she drops back down to five furlongs.
Irish raider, She's Quality will be looking to end a run of three successive runner-up finishes on British soil. Frost At Dawn also placed second on her most recent outing in the King Charles Stakes. Night Raider also sits prominently in the market, despite fading badly when attempting to make all in both the King Charles III Stakes and the July Cup.
Two-time Royal Ascot winner, Khaadem will be aiming to build on a limp reappearance in the Hackwood Stakes. Henry de Bromhead's Town And Country, and Ed Walker's Celandine bolster the three-year-old contingent in this sprint. Other runners include Clive Cox's Kerdos, Spartan Arrow for Archie Watson, Jm Jungle for John & Sean Quinn, and the fast-starting Clarendon House.
2025 King George Qatar Stakes Tips
After my original value selection, Celandine was ruled a non-runner, I'm left looking for an alternative. Second on my list was KERDOS (15/2), who produced the best performance of his career when winning last year's Temple Stakes on genuinely soft ground at Haydock.
Clive Cox's five-year-old is yet to produce his best form this season. Kerdos was well-beaten in the Duke Of York Stakes first time out, and went on to finish fifth in the King Charles II Stakes - having unshipped Christophe Soumillon and gotten loose before the start. Kerdos settled better in the Coral Charge at Sandown, but couldn't find an extra gear late on and his challenge flattened out.
Soumillon's mount was beaten two lengths when fifth in this race 12 months ago. Slower ground on this occasion should aid his challenge, and the in-form Cox has added first-time cheek-pieces to try and help this talented sprinter stay focused on the task at hand.
