While Irish eyes are focused on day one of the Dublin Racing Festival, Sandown will host the Grade One Scilly Isles Novices' Chase. This two-and-a-half-mile contest has been won by many top horses down the years, with several winners going on to score at the Cheltenham Festival.

2024 Scilly Isles Novices' Chase Tips - Colonel Harry
With Corbetts Cross now out of the race, Hermes Allen tops the market. Paul Nicholls' star has taken to chasing well, winning the John Francombe on his debut over fences at Newbury before a solid effort in the Kauto Star. Despite those results, Hermes Allen is yet to convince me as a chaser and I'm not sure this testing, right-handed track is what he's been crying out for.
Nickle Back will go hard and fast from the front, but I don't think he's good enough to win a Grade One. Le Patron - whose stamina is unproven - only knows one way of going too and Djelo can be keen in the early stages of his races. The stamina will be key if the aforementioned trio race as expected, so backing a runner who's won over this distance seems extremely sensible.
The one I've landed on is COLONEL HARRY (6/1). Ben Pauling's star ran a fine race here at Sandown behind Le Patron in the Henry VIII Novices' Chase, where he was outpaced for much of the contest but finished the race well to finish a close second.
Colonel Harry stepped up in distance at Wetherby last time out and put in another excellent round of jumping. Gavin Sheehan coaxed his mount to the front when entering the finish straight and needed just a hands-and-heels ride after the final flight to see off the wayward Trelawne.
As most of Ben Pauling's novices do, Colonel Harry has jumped beautifully since being pointed at a fence and I think Sheehan's mount had plenty left in the tank when winning the Towton. Colonel Harry can't afford to get outpaced again, but he should be much more comfortable over this extended trip and I feel like there's a good deal more progress to come from this likable seven-year-old.
