Ombudsman headlines British challenge on Dubai World Cup Night
The Dubai World Cup Night 2026 is drawing near, featuring a stellar lineup of international racing stars. Leading the British charge is Ombudsman, a strong contender in the Dubai Turf. The Gosden-trained horse prepares for a potentially triumphant return, competing against rivals like Facteur Cheval and Gaia Force. In the Sheema Classic, Calandagan eyes victory following a historic Japan Cup win. Among other highlights, Forever Young and Pyromancer headline the Dubai World Cup and UAE Derby, respectively. Despite the ongoing problems in the Middle East, a wave of International stars will descend upon Meydan for Dubai World Cup Night this Saturday.
Headlining the British challenge is the Godolphin-owned Ombudsman, who'll carry a short price into the Dubai Turf.
John and Thady Gosden won this race three times with the talented Lord North. Like his former stablemate, Ombudsman won the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot, before a superb victory over Delacroix in the Juddmonte International Stakes at York.
William Buick's mount was beaten by Calandagan on his most recent outing in the Champion Stakes. To prepare for Saturday's Dubai Turf, the Gosden's sent Ombudsman to Chelmsford for a racecourse gallop earlier this month.
"He worked nicely at Chelmsford, which is something we have done prior to Dubai in the past as it’s an awayday and it's very handy for us." Gosden told the press last week.
"The British horses are due to ship out next weekend, going through Paris, where I believe they will pick up French and Irish runners. It’s the 30th anniversary of the Dubai World Cup, so it was always going to be the target for Ombudsman."
Ombudsman is already odds-on to hand the Gosden's a fourth Dubai Turf. Jerome Reynier's former winner. Facteur Cheval lines up in opposition, along with Quddwah for Simon and Ed Crisford, and Japanese seven-year-old Gaia Force.

Calandagan will also make an appearance at Meydan. Since beating Ombusdman in the Champion Stakes, Francis-Henri Graffard's superstar became the first French horse to capture the prestigious Japan Cup. Sadly, there will be no rematch with Ombudsman on Saturday, as Francis-Henri Graffard's superstar will contest the 12-furlong Sheema Classic instead.
Charlie Appleby hasn't been anywhere near as prolific during this Dubai World Cup Carnival as he usually is. Godolphin's top trainer has opted to send the likes of Rebel's Romance and Opera Ballo back to the UK, leaving Royal Power and By The Book to take on Calandagan in the Sheema Classic - where they'll be joined in the field by Willie Mullins' Ethical Diamond, and Marco Botti's Giavellotto.
Calandagan's countryman, Lazzat is the hot-favourite to land the Al Quoz Sprint, where he'll take on Rayevka and Khaadem. Joseph O'Brien's pair of Al Riffa and Sons And Lovers take on an almost entirely European field in the Dubai Gold Cup. Jamie Osbourne's Brotherly Love, and the Crisford's Meydaan take their chances on the Dubai dirt.
The Dubai World Cup betting is dominated by dual-Saudi Cup winner Forever Young. Yoshito Yahagi's Breeders' Cup winner could only finish third behind Hit Show in last year's renewal, and Brad Cox's surprise winner will return to defend his crown.
Keiji Yoshimura will be represented by UAE Derby favourite Pyromancer. Jose D'Angelo's US raider, Bentornato leads the Gordon Shaheen betting. Local trainer, Bhupat Seemar runs talking horse Salloom in the UAE Derby, and will send out the two fancied runners in the opening Godolphin Mile, Commissioner King and Mendelssohn Bay.
