Australian Oaks betting selections & tips

We will have expert tips for the Australian Oaks available when the final-field markets are released by bookmakers.

Futures markets are open for the fillies staying feature in the months leading up to The Championships.

Australian Oaks history

The Australian Oaks has been around since 1885 when Uralla won the inaugural event.

Since then it has been run over different distances and under different names, but it has been run over 2400m since 1973 and it's likely to stay that way.

The Oaks is a race which can improve a fillies' breeding career and some of Australia's best have increased their value by winning the Oaks.

Flight, Light Fingers and Surround have all had races named after them and winning the Oaks was a big part of their successful careers.

The blue-ribbon event for three-year-old staying fillies has been won by many of Australasia's greats, including New Zealand-raced runners Daffodil, Rising Romance, Sofia Rosa and 2017 winner Bonnval.

The great Winx wasn't able to win in 2015 when finishing second behind subsequent Melbourne Cup runner Gust of Wind, but she would later go on a lengthy winning streak to atone that defeat.

It's one of the best autumn features at The Championships and its rich history will continue with many more champions winners to come.

Australian Oaks betting guide

New Zealand fillies are starting to dominate the Australian Oaks, much like other age-group features throughout The Championships.

The Kiwis won with Daffodil, Rising Romance, Sofia Rosa and Bonneval – all wins coming from 2009-2017.

They handle the distance better than most of the Australian-bred fillies due to the climate and training preparation, but there have also been some quality local winners.

Royal Descent was a bridesmaid throughout most of her career, but her crowning achievement came in the 2013 Oaks.

2016 and 2017 winners both paid $4.75 on the tote and punters often find it easy to identify the best horse in the race, but there have been some upsets.

Winx was beaten in 2015 by $17 chance Gust of Wind. The 2.5-length victory was a classy display and that of a horse which would later relish the long distances.

On the other hand, Winx is not a 2400m horse and her odds of $2.75 were a touch short in retrospect.

Rising Romance ($6) and Royal Descent ($4.50) were well-found in the market prior to that, but the shortest-priced favourite in recent history was Streama in 2012.

She paid $1.40 to win after a stellar career and although she only won by a long head and it was one of the worst Oaks fields in history, punters weren't complaining.

Australian Oaks lead-up races

The Australian Oaks used to be called the Adrian Knox Oaks and the Adrian Knox Stakes is now one of the major lead-up races.

Held on Day 1 of The Championships, the Adrian Knox has spawned many winners of the Oaks, most recently with Royal Descent.

The Storm Queen Stakes at Rosehill is also a good guide and although not many winners have come from that race, it produced the winner in 2008 and 2006.
