The 2025 Melbourne Cup Carnival spans from Saturday, 1st November to Saturday, 8th November at Flemington racecourse.

The action begins with Victoria Derby Day on November st, featuring the Group 1 Victoria Derby over 2,500 metres - a key test for the countries top three-year-olds.

Top Horses

This year’s Melbourne Cup build-up is already generating excitement with a mix of home-grown stars and international challengers.

Sir Delius has risen to the head of the early Melbourne Cup betting, with his staying credentials marking him as a horse well suited to the 3,200-metre test at Flemington. Joseph O'Brien will be represented by Group One winner Al Riffa, while his father, Aidan O'Brien, has handed an entry to Goodwood Cup winner Scandinavia.

Vauban is one of the most anticipated challengers, after he was purchased for a seven-figure sum and specifically targeted at Flemington by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. Trinity College, Deakin and Aeliana are also in line for a tilt at the Cup.

Queen Of Clubs remains a leading contender for the VRC Oaks, before Joliestar and Jimmysstar clash in the Champions Sprint. Australian racing fans are already anticipating a fascinating showdown in the Champion Stakes, where superstar Via Sistina could clash with the emerging force that is Treasurethe Moment.

Leading Trainers

The training ranks in Australia are as competitive as the races themselves, with several high-profile figures preparing major contenders for the carnival.

Chris Waller heads the list with more than two dozen Melbourne Cup nominations, underlining the depth of his stable as he seeks to add to his 2021 Cup victory with Verry Elleegant.

Sheila Laxon, who made history as the first woman to train a Melbourne Cup winner, remains a prominent figure, having partnered with John Symons to win last year’s Cup with Knight’s Choice. Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott continue to combine tradition and innovation, targeting overseas talent like Vauban to challenge the local stayers.

And although the late Bart Cummings still holds the all-time record with twelve Cup wins, his legacy continues to serve as the benchmark for every trainer striving to succeed at Flemington.
