2025 Coronation Cup Tips - French star poised for breakthrough Group One win
The 2025 Coronation Cup at the Epsom Derby Festival sees Calandagan as the favorite, despite previous narrow defeats in top-class races. Calandagan is favored due to promising performances and favorable soft ground conditions. Competitors like Jan Brueghel and Giavellotto have won Group One races but may struggle if conditions remain soft. Notable entries include Irish Oaks winner You Got To Me and Al Riffa. While many horses prefer firmer ground, Calandagan's prior success on soft surfaces positions it as the frontrunner for this prestigious race.

2025 Coronation Cup Entries
Following a stunning six-length triumph in the King Edward VII Stakes, Calandagan suffered narrow defeats in both the Juddmonte International and the Champion Stakes at Ascot. Francis-Henri Graffard's stable star was last seen finishing second again to Danon Decile in the Sheema Classic, after which connections said that the Coronation Stakes was his next target.
Sitting closest to Calandagan in the market is St Leger winner Jan Brueghel, who returned to action with a runner-up finish over ten furlongs last month. Giavellotto claimed his first Group One win out in Hong Kong in December, but has five lengths to find on Calandagan from their clash at Meydan.
Irish Oaks winner, You Got To Me could have her first start in the colours of Amo Racing at Epsom on Friday. Joseph O'Brien's Al Riffa looks likely to take his chance, along with Aidan O'Brien's second-string, Continuous.
Ancient Wisdom finished 11th in last year's Derby, but looks likely to return to Epsom on Friday. The final runner is recent Jockey Club Stakes winner Bellum Justum, who was beaten 13 lengths behind City Of Troy when seventh in the 2024 Epsom Derby.
2025 Coronation Cup Tips
Despite his lack of a victory at the highest level, CALANDAGAN (4/6) is undoubtedly the classiest horse in this contest. Francis Graffard's star has suffered narrow defeats on his last three starts in lucrative races and the prospect of soft ground at Epsom this weekend will only emphasise his chances.
Jan Brueghel, Giavellotto and You Got To Me have all done what Calandagan hasn't, and that's win Group One races.
Aidan O'Brien was worried that yielding to soft ground was too testing for Jan Brueghel before his St Leger win. Oisin Murphy has described his Hong Kong Vase winner as a "top of the ground horse" recently, and Ralph Beckett ran his Irish Oaks winner in last year's St Leger purely because the ground was favourably good. Soft ground will suit none of the three.
Al Riffa and Bellum Justum have produced their best form on nicer ground too. Ancient Wisdom will definitely relish plenty of cut in the ground, but didn't seem to handle the track when well-beaten in last year's Derby.
In short, this year's Coronation Cup looks like Calandagan's to lose. Graffard's raider brings the strongest form to the table and all of his wins in France came on very soft ground. If he handles the track, he should win.

Verdict
With conditions in his favour, it's hard to look past Calandagan in the 2025 Coronation Cup.
