A two-time winner of the Epsom Derby, Charlie Appleby was confident Desert Flower would hand him his first victory in the Epsom Oaks on Friday.

Appleby's star filly kicked 2025 off with an impressive victory in the 1000 Guineas. Desert Flower wasn't guaranteed to get the Oaks trip, but that didn't stop most bookmakers from cutting William Buick's mount into 11/10 favouritism before the off.

Aidan O'Brien ran three of his trial winners against the hot favourite, with Ryan Moore opting to ride Minnie Hauk over Whirl and Giselle. Ralph Beckett's hopes of winning a third Oaks rested on the shoulders of Revoir, who finished a close second on her comeback at Newbury.

Qilin Queen got the better of Revoir that day and lined up in opposition again. 1000 Guineas fourth, Elwateen was supplemented into the race by Shadwell Stud. Wemighttakedlongway and Go Go Boots also featured in a small, select field.

From his high draw in stall nine, Wayne Lordan went straight to the front aboard Whirl. Wemighttakedlongway made all when winning the Salsabil Stakes and went forward to keep Whirl company in the early stages.

Desert Flower and Minnie Hauk broke well from their low draws and settled behind the pacemakers. Revoir was being scrubbed along to keep up with the early pace. Qilin Queen and Elwateen settled in the midfield. Giselle and Go Go Boots were held up at the rear.

Whirl soon established a clear lead and steadied the pace at the top of the hill. Minnie Hauk travelled comfortably in second. Desert Flower, on the other hand, didn't seem to handle the bend all that well and William Buick's was the first time to come off the bridle.

With two furlongs to travel, Ryan Moore took aim at his stablemate and pulled Minnie Hauk onto the shoulder of Whirl. Revoir responded to pressure well, but seemed to lug down the camber of the track as she attempted to mount a challenge.

Minnie Hauk soon edged into a narrow lead, but Whirl wasn't lying down without a fight. The two Ballydoyle runners engaged in a ding-dong battle to the line, but in the end, it was Ryan Moore and Minnie Hauk who came out on top.

To her credit, Desert Flower saw out the trip well to finish a clear third ahead of Wemighttakedlongway, who kept on well to finish fourth.
