After an extensive three-year redevelopment, Belmont Park reopens this weekend, featuring the celebrated Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes as Friday's highlight. Japanese champion Forever Young leads the betting as the odds-on favorite, facing rivals like Phileas Fogg and Baeza. With the Gold Cup being a key qualifying race for the Breeders' Cup Classic, high stakes and excitement are guaranteed. The key recommendation for punters is to watch Forever Young, whose unbeaten US record and near-miss in Dubai make him the one to beat, but several strong challengers await.

Following a three-year total rebuild, Belmont Park will reopen its gates to the public this weekend. Friday's celebratory card is headlined by the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes, a historic ten-furlong Group One race which features in the "Win And You're In" series for the Breeders' Cup Classic.

The odds-on favourite to land Friday's feature is Japanese superstar Forever Young. Yoshito Yahagi's star landed the Breeders' Cup Classic on his most recent run on US soil and returns to action for the first time since that narrow defeat to Magnitude in the Dubai World Cup.

Leading the charge against the favourite is Phileas Fogg, who steps up to Group One company following a ten-length romp in the Suburban Stakes. Bill Mott's Baeza was also beaten by Magnitude in the Stephen Foster Stakes and has nine lengths to find with Forever Young from their clash in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic.

Bill Mott's second-string Stars And Stripes drops back in trip after winning the 14-furlong Birdstone Stakes. Ken McPeek's four-year-old Render Judgement is the seventh and final entrant. A flat field of five will now contest Friday's feature, after Banishing and Chunk Of Gold were scratched.

2026 Jockey Club Gold Cup Tips

Baeza has plenty of talent, but often ruins his chances coming out of the gates. Bill Mott has taken the blinkers off for this assignment, which could make him a little more alert, but Baeza still can't be trusted.

I have reservations about Phileas Fogg too, who posted a huge speed figure when allowed to dictate the Suburban Stakes from the front. FOREVER YOUNG (4/6) won't allow Kendrick Carmouche's mount such a luxury on Friday, and the odds-on favourite is simply impossible to oppose.

Ryusei Sakai's ride is the highest-rated dirt horse in the world. Forever Young took down a much stronger field than this when winning the Breeders' Cup Classic last season, and his victory over Nysos in the Saudi Cup was boosted when the runner-up slammed a quality field in the Metropolitan Handicap on his most recent outing.

The favourite has been drawn wide, but that shouldn't be an issue given the size of the field. Forever Young boasts a perfect record when returning from a significant layoff. He should really be priced at 2/5 or even 1/3, so 4/6 might represent a touch of value.

Verdict

Forever Young is our best bet in the 2026 Jockey Club Gold Cup.
