The first Grade One race for hurdlers in Ireland takes place at Punchestown on Saturday, as a select field enters the Morgiana Hurdle. State Man has won the last two renewals of this famous race and will bid to emulate the great Hurricane Fly, who claimed a hat-trick of Morgiana wins between 2012 and '14.

2024 Morgiana Hurdle Entries
While it may not be much of a betting heat, Saturday's Morgiana Hurdle should provide plenty of answers and entertainment.
State Man will be looking to complete a hat-trick of victories in this Grade One, and preserve his perfect five-from-five record around Punchestown. Willie Mullins also runs Mares' Hurdle winner Lossiemouth, who has been pointed at the Champion Hurdle this term, and has also scored on both of her previous starts at this venue.
To add further intrigue to this fascinating battle, Gordon Elliott runs the race-fit Brighterdaysahead. Elliott's mare currently heads the betting for the Mares' Hurdle, but Gordon said after her reappearance win at Down Royal that the Champion Hurdle may not be out of the equation, and he's decided to test Brighterdaysahead against the best two-miler around on Saturday.
Willie Mullins also runs Daddy Long Legs, Winter Fog and Sir Gerhard, who all have plenty to find. Smooth Tom was a 33/1 outsider against Brighterdaysahead at Down Royal, where he unseated Cian Quirke at the third flight. No Looking Back is yet to record an RPR in the 140s, and a mark of 160 may be required to even finish third in Saturday's feature.
2024 Morgiana Hurdle Tips
I'm not in the least bit surprised to see Paul Townend riding STATE MAN (2/5). Willie Mullins' seven-year-old is the horse to beat in the two-mile division, having suffered just one defeat - at the hands of a prime Constitution Hill - in 11 starts at Grade One level.
Lossiemouth's reappearance win at Cheltenham last January proved that she had more than enough two-mile speed to be effective over the minimum distance. I do, however, think that the nature of the track at Punchestown suits State Man better. Lossiemouth's best chance of beating her stablemate over this distance will be around a more testing track like Cheltenham.
I'm not convinced at all that Brighterdaysahead is a two-miler. She looks like a staying chaser in the making to me, and I doubt whether her jumping will be slick enough to hang with the top two in the betting over this distance. Away from the leading trio of contenders, I can't see anyone else getting involved.
At 2/5, State Man wasn't appealing from a betting standpoint. However, since the field was confirmed, the two-time defending champion has drifted out to 4/5, with Lossiemouth coming in from 7/2 to 11/4. I know who I'd rather back at those prices, and it's not Patrick Mullins' mount!
