The opening day of Newmarket's July Festival is headlined by the Princess Of Wales's Stakes. This Group Two was first run in 1894, and greats like Solario, Shantou and Big Orange feature on the roll of honour.

2024 Princess Of Wales's Stakes Runners

Hamish tops the betting for Thursday's feature at Newmarket. William Haggas' eight-year-old is an eight-time winner at Group Three level and travels to flat racing HQ on the back of a narrow defeat in the Group One Coronation Cup at Epsom.

Oisin Murphy will again partner Giavellotto, following their impressive victory in the Yorkshire Cup in May. Arrest steps back into Group Two company, having finished a clear second behind Point Lonsdale in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester.

Ryan Moore will ride Dubai Stakes winner Time Lock for Harry Charlton. Outbox, who beat Time Lock in the Jockey Club Stakes earlier in the season, will represent Archie Watson. The sixth and final entrant is Maxi King, who'll be having his first start for Amo Racing's trainer Raphael Freire.

The ground is currently soft enough for Hamish to be at his best. Although the forecast looks dry from Wednesday morning, there should still be some juice in the ground on day one and that performance at Epsom makes Tom Marquand's mount the one to beat.

Arrest has never been a horse that's interested me and Kieran Shoemark's mount represents little value, based on what he's produced this term. In contrast, I'm a big fan of Giavellotto, but he's at his best on quicker ground and Oisin Murphy's mount has a penalty to shoulder too.

At the prices, I will take a chance on TIME LOCK (5/1), who burst onto the scene with a power-packed victory in the Dubai Stakes in September.

Harry Charlton's mare took a while to get going under Ryan Moore in the Jockey Club Stakes on her reappearance, eventually finishing second as the 11/8 favourite. It was impossible to tell whether Time Lock had improved for that run in the Coronation Stakes at Epsom, where Charlton's five-year-old didn't handle the track at all and was eased down two furlongs from home.

Time Lock will be much happier back at Newmarket and she does handle a bit of ease in the ground. With Ryan Moore back in the saddle, I wouldn't be surprised if she challenged for the victory.
