Amelia Earhart led the field into today's Epsom Oaks, as trainer Aidan O'Brien targeted a 12th victory in this historic Classic.

Ryan Moore took the ride aboard O'Brien's Cheshire Oaks winner, and late support ensured that Amelia Earhart entered the stalls as the clear favourite. Wayne Lordan partnered with O'Brien's second-string Cameo in the Epsom Oaks, with Sean Levey riding Ballydoyle's likely pace-maker, Sugar Island.

The Gosdens have enjoyed plenty of recent success in the Oaks, and their Musidora Stakes winner Legacy Link rivalled Amelia Earhart for favouritism during the build-up. Joseph O'Brien's Salsabil Stakes winner Thundering On had been heavily supported over the past week or so.

Ralph Beckett saddled three entrants, with A La Prochaine, On Message and K Sarra all sitting towards the bottom end of the market. Charlie Johnston was represented by Venetian Lace, who stepped up in trip after placing in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Cameo went forward early from her wide draw. Sugar Island was a step slow out of the blocks, but Sean Levey quickly chased his mount to the head of the field.

Venetian Lace was prominently. Amelia Earhart sat happily in midfield early on. Legacy Link was held up alongside the three Ralph Beckett runners, with Dylan Browne McMonagle biding his time aboard Thundering On.

There was little change in the order as the field climbed to the top of Tattenham Hill. Sugar Island and Cameo began to track towards the stands' rail on the descent into the home straight, and the field began to spread out.

Ryan Moore went wide aboard Amelia Earhart, who didn't pick up straight away. Venetian Lace fell away quickly, as On Message and K Sarra began to toil. Sugar Island showed no signs of slowing down and soon shrugged off the attentions of Cameo.

Colin Keane smuggled Legacy Link into contention down the centre. The second favourite was tracked by Thundering On, who was still firmly on the bridle entering the final two furlongs.

The two trial winners soon put daylight between themselves and the chasing pack, and Colin Keane was the first to commit. Dylan Browne McMonagle, however, was simply toying with the leader, and once he pushed the button, Thundering On took off.

Joseph O'Brien's filly strode two, three and then four lengths clear of Legacy Link. Thundering On was even eased down as she crossed the line, recording a simply superb victory in the Epsom Oaks.

Legacy Link ran a cracker in second. Sugar Island kept on gamely to her credit, repelling the late charge of A La Prochaine to secure a podium finish for Ballydoyle.

Amelia Earhart was the big disappointment of the race, finishing a long way adrift of the leaders. Cameo faded tamely too. On Message, K Sarra and Venetian Lace were all well beaten.
