Saturday's card at Wincanton is headlined by the ever-popular Badger Beers Trophy. This Premier Handicap was first held at Wincanton in 1962, with popular chasers like Teeton Mill, Present Man and Frodon featuring on the roll of honour.

2024 Badger Beers Trophy Tip 1 - Mofasa

Both Dan Skelton and Harry Derham have proven themselves to be excellent target trainers - a trait they picked up during their times with Paul Nicholls. Nicholls is, in fact, the best target trainer in the National Hunt game and he always has one or two earmarked for the Badger Beers.

Seven of the last 16 winners of this handicap have come from Ditcheat, along with eight placed runners in the years where he hasn't saddled the winner. Nicholls' only entrant this year is MOFASA (5/1) who, according to a recent stable tour, has been working towards this contest all summer.

A progressive novice hurdler for Michael Scudamore, Mofasa looked destined for big targets when running away with a novice chase at Huntingdon last November. After a disappointing effort at Cheltenham's December Meeting, Nicholls' eight-year-old underwent a wind-op, but didn't look the same horse when he returned in the spring with two forgettable performances.

Those defeats have helped Mofasa drop back down to a mark of 130, the same rating that Harry Cobden's mount struck off at Huntingdon. Nicholls' charge jumped beautifully that day, clearly enjoying the challenges posed by a sharp, right-handed track.

All of Mofasa's best performances have come at this time of the year and the fact that Nicholls has targetted this contest should ensure that Harry Cobden's mount goes off at a shorter price than 5/1.
