2024 Doncaster Cup Tips - Fan's favourite can triumph at Doncaster again

Leading the way in the betting is Sweet William, who followed a narrow victory in the Henry II Stakes with placed efforts behind Kyprios at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood. Stablemate Gregory faded badly when making the running in the Ascot Gold Cup, but performed much better when a place behind Sweet William at Goodwood, and when third again in the Lonsdale Cup at York.

Defending champion Trueshan scored in the Coral Marathon in July, but has a handful of lengths to find on Sweet William from their meetings at Sandown and Goodwood. Coltrane also has a few pounds to find on the favourite, following two disappointing efforts on his most recent starts.

Ryan Moore and Aidan O'Brien team up with Point Lonsdale, who disappointed when only fifth in the Lonsdale Cup, having gone off as the 2/1 favourite. The sixth and final runner is Adam Nicol's Wise Eagle, who was last seen finishing a well-beaten 16th in the Ebor.

I've never been a big fan of Gregory, and this extended trip of 18-furlongs doesn't favour the Gosden's four-year-old. Point Lonsdale weakened badly in the closing stages of his two-mile debut at York, so he too could be inconvenienced by this distance.

Coltrane has been really poor on his last couple of starts and I can't see him bouncing back on Friday. Wise Eagle, meanwhile, is completely out of his depth.

Sweet William brings the best recent form to the table and, while he may be more effective on softer ground, the going shouldn't be a problem. Alan King would want the ground softer for TRUESHAN (5/1) too, but Hollie Doyle's mount has shown a real liking for Doncaster the past two years and King's eight-year-old appeals most at the prices.

In 2022, Trueshan was beaten a neck in this contest by Coltrane, before reversing that form in the Long Distance Cup a month later. Last year, Hollie Doyle decided to take the race by the scruff of the neck when she realised the pace was far too slow and Trueshan responded magnificently, holding off Sweet William from the front to claim his sixth Group prize.

King's stable star improved on that tally again in July with an easy win in the Coral Marathon and Trueshan didn't run badly at all when fourth behind Kyprios at Goodwood. Doyle's mount has four lengths to find on Sweet William from that Group One, but the switch to Doncaster is in his favour and the ground will be marginally softer on Friday than it was in Sussex.
