Saturday's ITV action at Newbury is headlined by the Hackwood Stakes. While this sprint may only hold Group Three status, viewers look set for a fantastic renewal on Saturday afternoon, as nine runners rated 109 or above have been confirmed.

We've cast our eye through the confirmed field for Saturday's Hackwood Stakes and picked out our best bets.

2022 Hackwood Stakes Entries

Topping the betting with bet365 is the defending champion, Happy Romance, who returns to Newbury to defend her crown on the back of decent efforts in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes and the July Cup.

Man Of Promise disappointed a little in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, but showed out in Meydan during the winter that he's a sprinter worth following. David Evans' Rohaan steps back into Group Three company, after successfully defending his Wokingham Stakes crown at Ascot last time out.

Last year's runner-up, Diligent Harry will take on Happy Romance again. Owen Burrows has confirmed Jim Crowley in the saddle of Minzaal, with talented three-year-old Go Bears Go set to represent the younger brigade.

Other runners include Andrew Balding's Chil Chil, Hugo Palmer's Dubawi Legend and Henry Candy's Run To Freedom, who'll be ridden by the in-form Rob Hornby. Great Ambassador, Royal Commando, Saint Lawrence and Method also feature in the field.

2022 Hackwood Stakes Favourite

Sense Of Duty's absence makes this race even more competitive. A strong case could be made for the majority of the 14 runners.

There does seem to be a lack of pacesetters in the field. Go Bears Go has gone from the front in the past and Method usually makes the running. Man Of Promise could be ridden prominently if the early pace is fair sedate.

I fancy the race might be run to suit a strong closer. Rohaan certainly fits the profile. As does Chil Chil, who'll be making her first start of the season.

One who could be the wrong price is SAINT LAWRENCE. Roger Varian's charge won the Listed Denford Stakes here as a juvenile, but has been kept to sprinting distances since then and his results have been largely encouraging.

Saint Lawrence finished second to Rohaan in the Pavillion Stakes at Ascot last season and kicked off 2022 with a staying-on third behind the front-running Khaadem in the Palace House Stakes on the Rowley Mile. Andrea Atzeni's mount was last seen running in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he was beaten six lengths back in sixth, having gone off at a triple-figure price.

While all his runs this season have come over the minimum distance, a quick glance through Saint Lawrence's form book will tell you that he's more effective and more comfortable over this trip. Varian's four-year-old has been drawn nicely in stall four and I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he was good enough to contend.

Verdict

2022 Hackwood Stakes

This year's Hackwood Stakes looks exceptionally open and should provide fantastic entertainment. Saint Lawrence boasts some solid form at this sort of level and could run much better than his current odds suggest. He'll be my speculative each-way bet.
