2:55pm Haydock - Cecil Frail Stakes Tips
I'm happy to give another chance to SPLISH SPLASH (50/1), considering her lengthy price. I backed Eve Johnson Houghton's filly at a fancy price in the Fred Darling, and Splish Splosh was supported in the build-up, but went on to run a dreadful race, finishing last of the 14 runners.
That wasn't the first time that Johnson Houghton's filly has struggled over seven furlongs. She was well beaten on her second juvenile outing at Doncaster too. Splish Splash bounced back from that defeat by claiming a maiden victory with an emphatic course-and-distance triumph here at Haydock in October, before finishing third in the Bosra Sham at Newmarket at the end of the season.
That run behind Spicy Marg and Azleet looks to be fairly strong form, and Splish Splash should have come on fitness-wise for that reappearance outing at Newbury. Being a three-year-old, Saffie Osborne's mount gets a chunk of weight from the older sprinters in this Listed contest, and she's bred to appreciate a bit of cut in the ground.
4:17pm Goodwood - Festival Stakes Tips
Having run so well on his reappearance in the Huxley Stakes, I could see ICE MAX (11/2) going close in this Listed contest.
Karl Burke's star will carry a three-pound penalty following his victory in the Robin Hood Stakes at Nottingham last October. Ice Max has already proven himself to be better than Listed grade though, having won the Group Two Celebration Mile here at Goodwood back in 2024.
I thought the ground would be a bit quick for Sam James' mount at Chester, as Ice Max stepped up to ten furlongs for the first time. Lambourn showed his class in the end, beating another Group One winner in Bay City Roller, with Ice Max running on powerfully late in the piece to finish on the tails of the leaders.
Burke's five-year-old had no trouble seeing out this distance at Chester, and softer ground on Friday will certainly suit Ice Max. A penalty isn't ideal, but James' mount is race-fit and has been drawn well in stall four. He's good enough to get the job done.
