2023 Relkeel Hurdle Entries
Marie's Rock handed Nicky Henderson his first victory in the Mares' Hurdle when she defeated Queens Brook over this distance back in March. Nico De Boinville's mount then beat Stormy Ireland and Epatante in the equivalent race at Punchestown and Marie's Rock is favourite to make a winning reappearance on Sunday.
Greatwood Handicap hero, I Like To Move It, Elite Hurdle victor, Knappers Hill and Nicky Henderson's second-string, First Street sit prominently in the betting. All three had been due to run in the International Hurdle here at Cheltenham, but will now step up to two-and-a-half-miles after that race was canceled.
Rex Dingle will ride Jeremy Scott's hardy front-runner Dashel Drasher, with Aidan Coleman confirmed in the saddle of Brewin'Upastorm. Gary Moore will run Haydock handicap winner Botox Has. Alan King's Tritonic and Dan Skelton's Langer Dan complete a high-quality field.
2023 Relkeel Hurdle Tips
Following two impressive Grade One wins during the spring, Marie's Rock is clearly the one to beat and, at 11/4, the favourite represents a bit of value. Nicky Henderson's mare has, however, suffered lengthy defeats on her first outing in both of the past two seasons and it's a long time since she's been seen on the track.
I Like To Move It and First Street don't strike me as natural two-and-a-half milers. Knappers Hill and Botox Has both have a penalty to contend with. Brewin'Upastorm has never produced his best around Cheltenham and I doubt whether either Tritonic or Langer Dan are up to Grade Two level.
DASHEL DRASHER, on the other hand, is proven at the highest level - albeit over fences. Jeremy Scott's ten-year-old won the Ascot Chase a couple of years ago and was last seen running a cracker in the Many Clouds Chase at Aintree, where he was only passed by Noble Yeats in the closing stages.
Scott's stable star won his only start over hurdles last season, beating the classy Beauport over this trip at Newbury. Dashel Drasher made a winning start to this season over the smaller obstacles at Aintree, where he made all the running to beat Voix Du Reve and Langer Dan in decisive fashion.
Rex Dingle's mount ended his novice hurdles campaign with a course-and-distance victory at Cheltenham's April Meeting back in 2018. This may be his prep run for the Ascot Chase, but if Dashel Drasher gets into a nice rhythm out in front, he could be very, very hard to pass.
Verdict
Marie's Rock is certainly a worthy favourite, but Dashel Drasher should be there-or-thereabouts and he represents plenty of each-way value at 8/1.
