Ladies day at the Cheltenham Festival comes to a close with the Grade One Champion Bumper. This is the only race during the meeting where no obstacles are jumped, and future stars like Florida Pearl, Cue Card, Champagne Fever and Envoi Allen have all come out on top in this excellent race.

The betting for this year’s Champion Bumper is dominated by two talented six-year-olds, and it’s Kilcruit who currently sits ahead of Sir Gerhard.

2021 Champion Bumper Tips – Worthy Favourite

Kilcruit bounded to the top of the Champion Bumper betting, following an effortless Grade Two triumph at the Dublin Racing Festival. Patrick Mullins barely flinched in the saddle as he swept into the lead on the favourite, and Kilcruit eased to an emphatic 12-length success.

Take nothing away from Kilcruit performance, it was terrific. However, the lead horses clearly went far too hard that day. Let’sbeclearabout it looked out on his feet and Ramillies – who won brilliantly over Christmas – almost came to a stand-still on the run to the line.

Kilcruit clocked a time 1.30 seconds slower than Honeysuckle’s Irish Champion Hurdle win, and 1.30 seconds quicker than the Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle run over the same distance. To see how good those differentials are, I’ve compared the times with the last three editions of that Grade Two Bumper.

Appreciate It’s time was half a second quicker than the Irish Champion Hurdle, and almost five seconds quicker than the handicap. Envoi Allen was 0.70 seconds slower than Apple’s Jade’s rapid Irish Champion Hurdle win, and 3.70 quicker than the handicap. Blackbow was two seconds quicker than Kilcruit on similar ground, his time was also 0.30 seconds quicker than that year’s Irish Champion Hurdle, and 1.90 seconds quicker than the Ladbrokes Handicap.

Times certainly aren't everything but, for me, those findings do take the gloss off Kilcruit’s victory. Willie Mullins’ star hasn’t been tested on either of his starts this term. The only time he’s really been challenged was last season, and he was beaten by Captain Kangaroo – who’s been beaten in all four of his hurdles races this term.

2021 Champion Bumper Tips – Potential Star

I think it’s well worth taking Kilcruit on with SIR GERHARD, who can make it three victories in a row for Cheveley Park Stud in the final race on day two of the Cheltenham Festival.

On his sole point-to-point start, Sir Gerhard destroyed Minella Drama – who’s recently won a Listed Hurdle and is now rated 142 – by 12 lengths. On his first start under rules, Gordon Elliott’s newcomer beat two future winners in The Banger Doyle and Vintage Prosecco by 14 and 17 lengths. Sir Gerhard then quickened clear of Letsbeclearaboutit to win a Listed Bumper at Navan by a comfortable margin.

Yes, Letsbeclearaboutit and The Banger Doyle were beaten 12 and 97 lengths respectively behind Kilcruit at Leopardstown. Both were up with the pace throughout that day. Letsbeclearaboutit did remarkably well to finish as close to the winner as he did, and The Banger Doyle practically crawled across the line.

I think there’s little to separate Sir Gerhard and Kilcruit. Both are clearly outstanding talents. I just feel Gordon Elliott’s contender will be too strong for Kilcruit in the finish, and he appeals most at 11/4.

Sir Gerhard has since been moved to Willie Mullins yard. Mullins often throws several runners into the Champion Bumper, so there is a chance the two could still take each-other on. However, there is a chance Willie could favour Kilcruit and maybe save Sir Gerhard for another assignment in Ireland.

2021 Champion Bumper Tips – Each-Way Players

Three Stripe Life could join stablemate Sir Gerhard in the field, having impressed recently at Navan. Elliott’s charge was handed an RPR of 127 for that effort, a mark which puts him bang in Champion Bumper contention.

Elliott has also handed entries to Gerri Colombe, Hollow Games and Ginto, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were saved for future assignments at Fairyhouse and Punchestown.

Grangee claimed a surprise win over Brandy Love, Party Central and Brooklyn Glory in the Grade Two Mares’ Bumper during the Dublin Racing Festival. Considering the winner was thrashed by Eileendover – who won’t be going to the Cheltenham Festival – I’m not sure we can read too much into that form. Keep Brandy Love onside though, especially when she goes over hurdles next season.

No Ordinary Joe could drop back to the flat, having finished fourth in the Kennel Gate on his first start over hurdles. Wonderwall won a competitive bumper at Ascot earlier in the season, but was only third when he tried to follow up in a Listed race in December.

I Am Maximus beat the Kennel Gate winner, My Drogo on his sole bumper start, and he’s certainly worth a mention. As is Dan Skelton’s mare Elle Est Belle, who dead-heated with Ishkhara Lady in a Listed bumper at Cheltenham in November, and has been laid out for the Champion Bumper ever since.

Three Stripe Life certainly looks the best each-way option, but I’m going to go all-in on SIR GERHARD, and hope he can hand Kilcruit a sound thrashing.
