2025 Irish St Leger Runners
With no Kyprios to rely on this year, Aidan O'Brien will rest his hopes on Illinois in the Irish St Leger. O'Brien's colt finished second in the British equivalent of this Classic at Doncaster last season, and Illinois has been forced to settle for second in his two Group One starts so far this term at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood.
Topping the betting is Al Riffa, who has been sold to Australian Bloodstock since his runaway triumph in the Curragh Cup. Ralph Beckett is represented by the unbeaten Amiloc, who hasn't been seen since his impressive victory in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Karl Burke sends over the consistent Al Qareem, who hasn't finished better than fourth in three previous starts at Group One level. Colin and Gerard Keane team up with former Royal Ascot winner Crystal Black, despite his two defeats at Group Three level this term.
Aidan O'Brien also runs Queenstown, with Leinster the second-string for Joseph O'Brien. Adrian Murray and Amo Racing team up with Dallas Star. The field is completed by Pavel Vovcenko's German Listed winner, Waldadler.
2025 Irish St Leger Tips
Al Riffa and Illinois bring genuine Group One form into this Classic, while the unbeaten Amiloc has to be regarded as a big player. That being said, LEINSTER (25/1) has always been an intriguing horse for me, and I fancy backing Joseph O'Brien's gelding at a lengthy price.
Once-raced at two and only twice at three, Leinster secured an impressive victory on his fourth career start in a handicap at the Curragh in March. Despite his inexperience, O'Brien's star secured creditable fourth-place finishes in both the Chester Cup and the Ascot Stakes over the summer - where he travelled a little too keen and maybe didn't see out the extended trip on both occasions.
Dylan Browne McMonagle managed to hold onto his mount for a little longer over this course-and-distance in the Irish St Leger Trial. Leister responded with his most impressive performance to date, showing a nice turn-of-foot in the closing stages to beat Dallas Star by almost five lengths.
O'Brien has been very patient with this son of Camelot, and Leinster seems to be coming to the boil nicely. There's plenty of ability under this lightly-raced gelding's bonnet. I really think he can make an impact in this sort of company.
