The 2026 Hollywoodbets Durban July, South Africa’s largest horse race, is set for Saturday at Greyville with a prize pot of R5m. A significant shake-up in the betting followed the withdrawal of favorites like See It Again and defending champion The Real Prince. Star Major now leads the field at 3/1, closely followed by Wish List and Note To Self. Other key contenders include Regulation, Zeitz, and Viva’s Liberte. The current market is dominated by in-form three-year-olds, making this year's contest highly competitive.

2026 Durban July Runners

This year's Durban July was dealt a blow when See It Again, Eight On Eighteen and defending champion The Real Prince were all scratched at the second stage of declarations. Their defections led to a huge shake-up in the betting, which is now dominated by the three-year-olds.

The new favourite is Star Major, who leapt into Durban July contention after winning the Daily News 2000. James Crawford's rising star got the better of Happy Verse and Note To Self that day, and all three sit prominently in the latest Durban July market.

Note To Self will represent Justin Snaith, as will leading three-year-old filly Wish List, who has collected two Grade Two victories and two Grade One triumphs since finishing third in the Cape Fillies Guineas in December. Despite that defeat in the Daily News 2000, Note To Self still rivalled Star Major for favouritism, but Richie Fourie's mount has drifted recently as money has arrived for Wish List, who is edging closer to the market leader.

Despite a disappointing run in the Betgames Cup Trial, Regulation is available at a single-figure price and crack Australian jockey Zac Lloyd has been booked to take the ride. Willem Nel's Zeitz claimed victory in the last of the recognised Durban July trials and entered the betting for the big one at 16/1. Money has also arrived this week for Candice Bass' Viva's Liberte, who could be one of the pace angles in this year's contest.

Legal Counsel heads the Durban July weights following placed efforts in the Drill Hall Stakes and the Gold Challenge. Frank Robinson's filly Mocha Blend will take her chance, along with another runner from the Justin Snaith stable, Native Ruler.

Gladatorian and King Pelles have been confirmed in the final Durban July field. Other notable names who remain in contention include Isivivane, Hazy Dazy, Aladdin's Lamp and The Ultimate King.
