A dramatic turn of events at the 2025 Nassau Stakes saw a rare flag start due to severe thunderstorms at Goodwood, leading to the withdrawal of traditional starting stalls. Aidan O'Brien's filly Whirl took full advantage, leading from the onset to secure a commanding victory. For the first time in recent history, we saw a flag start for a British Group One flat race at Goodwood on Friday.
The thunderstorm that hit Goodwood an hour before the Nassau Stakes resulted in the stall handlers ditching the metal starting stalls. Aidan O'Brien's top filly, Whirl was still the short-priced favourite as the drama around the start continued.
Andrew Balding's filly, See The Fire was the highest-placed of the older horses in the market. Aidan O'Brien's second-string Bedtime Story, and Coronation Stakes winner Cercene also flew the flag for Ireland. Runnning Lion, the backmarker of the five, was heavily backed in the build-up, with punters expecting John and Thady Gosden's mare to deal with the difficult conditions best.

Ryan Moore was always going to make the running aboard Whirl, and the flag start allowed the favourite to poach a lead at the off. Cercene and Running Lion were positioned prominently behind the leader. See The Fire had to be rousted at the start by Oisin Murphy, but settled quickly in fourth place before the slow-starting Bedtime Story.
There was little change in the order through the first half of the race. At the top of the hill, Moore made a B-line for the stand's rail aboard Whirl, with the rest of the field following in-behind.
Moore rousted the favourite along at the two pole and Whirl responded, moving two lengths clear of the chasing pack. Running Lion soon gave way as See The Fire picked up the chase. Oisin Murphy's mount had travelled best into the contest, but seemed to find little on the rain-softened ground.
Soon, the race was over. Whirl quickly opened up a four length advantage and never looked like being caught. Cercene saw out the trip well to finish second ahead of See The Fire, but neither could lay a glove on Whirl, who celebrated her second Group One win on the bounce.
