The final Group One contest staged during Glorious Goodwood is the Nassau Stakes. This historic race was first held on day three back in 1840 and has been won by legendary fillies and mares like Pretty Polly, Roussalka and Midday.

2025 Nassau Stakes Runners

Just five runners will contest Thursday's Nassau Stakes. The betting is headed by Oaks runner-up Whirl, who saw off Kalpana when claiming her first Group One win in the Pretty Polly Stakes last time out.

Joseph Murphy landed the biggest win of his career when Cercene struck in the Coronation Stakes at Goodwood and Gary Carroll's mount will step up in trip for the first time. Aidan O'Brien has also entered Bedtime Story, who was last seen finishing second in the Prix de Diane at Chantilly.

See The Fire finished second in this race 12 months ago, but Andrew Balding's Prince Of Wales's Stakes third will have to give weight to her younger rivals. John and Thady Gosden's five-year-old, Running Lion is the fifth and final entrant.

2025 Nassau Stakes Tips

See The Fire is a fantastic mare. Andrew Balding's star blitzed her rivals in the Middleton Stakes and ran a great race when third against the colts in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes, where Oisin Murphy had to take the braveman's route down the inside rail.

See The Fire's late challenge from the rear came up a neck short of Opera Singer 12 months ago and Balding has said a few times that this has been her main target. However, thunderstorms have been forecast for Thursday and the prospect of rain-softened ground will suit Aidan O'Brien's pair, both of whom will be getting nine pounds from the second-favourite.

Bedtime Story is progressing nicely and the track at Goodwood should suit. That being said, Ryan Moore has opted to stay with WHIRL (11/8), and I expect the favourite will be very difficult to pass.

I backed Whirl in the Epsom Oaks and was gutted when Minnie Hauk stuck her neck out to land that Classic. Ryan Moore's mount then looked likely to be passed by Kalpana in the Pretty Polly Stakes, but Whirl found plenty for pressure along the rail and kicked a length clear of her rival in the closing stages.

Moore had made all to win the Nassau on a couple of occasions and he'll attempt to execute similar tactics on Thursday. Whirl won a Group Three on soft ground in the autumn and the form of both the Epsom Oaks and the Pretty Polly has been boosted.
