2024 July Cup Tips - Two to back in Saturday's feature

The final day of racing at the July Meeting, highlighted by the prestigious July Cup, features sprinting legends. Inisherin, a top contender with a 9/4 odds, dominates discussions but isn't a solid bet due to lurking threats. The final day of racing at the July Meeting is headlined by one of the most important sprint races staged in Britain, the July Cup. This Group One was first staged back in 1876 and has been won by sprinting royalty like Ormonde, Sundridge, Abernant, Right Boy and Moorestyle.

Inisherin produced a performance of real star quality in the Sandy Lanes at Haydock and lived up to that billing at Royal Ascot. Tom Eaves' mount was much the best in the Commonwealth Cup and he fully warrants his position at the head of the market.

However, 9/4 isn't a price that I'm keen to take, especially when there are several dangerous contenders lurking at more appealing odds.

Vandeek looked badly in need of the run at Haydock and his progress must have been hampered by the setback that ruled him out of Ascot. River Tiber was extremely disappointing in the Jersey Stakes, having been backed off the boards in the build-up, and you can't attribute that off-day to the seven-furlong trip.

2024 Commonwealth Cup Tip 1 - Jasour


The other three-year-old in the field is JASOUR (14/1), who I backed in the Commonwealth Cup. 

The hood was a little slow to come off as the gates opened, which seemed to light Jim Crowley's mount up, as he pulled hard through the early stages. Crowley then had to pull his mount towards the centre of the track to make his challenge, and Jasour responded well, but there was no real chance of catching Inisherin after so much going wrong earlier in the contest.

Jasour went into the Royal meeting on the back of an excellent win in the Commonwealth Cup Trial, where he was more than happy with a little juice in the ground. Cox's star has history at the July Festival, having won the July Stakes impressively 12 months ago. 14/1 is too big a price for me to pass up.

2024 Commonwealth Cup Tip 2 - Swingalong


Despite a sizeable pull at the weights, three-year-olds aren't dominant in the July Cup. Older horses have won half of the last ten renewals and accounted for the majority of the placers in that period, so his age shouldn't put off fans of the seven-year-old Kinross.

I'm slightly confused as to why SWINGALONG (33/1) can be backed at 33/1 with bet365. Karl Burke's mare ran a blinder in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, where only the fast-finishing Khaadem was able to pass Clifford Lee's mount.

Although she's yet to make the breakthrough at the highest level, Swingalong hasn't finished outside the first four in her five appearances in six-furlong Group Ones. Front-running tactics often bear fruit on the July course and Lee's mount is proven on all kinds of ground. 33/1 is huge.

Verdict

Jasour and Swingalong are our two selections for the 2024 July Cup.
