2026 Commonwealth Cup Results - Venetian Sun justifies favouritism at Ascot
Venetian Sun justified favouritism in the 2026 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, clinching her second victory at the prestigious meeting. The large field split into two groups, with the pace in the centre proving decisive. In a tight finish, Venetian Sun held off outsider Spicy Marg, with Division finishing third. The result showcased the dominance of top contenders and set Venetian Sun on course for the July Cup. Albert Einstein disappointed again, while several outsiders impressed with bold runs.

The first of two Group Ones to be run on day four of Royal Ascot was the Commonwealth Cup, and 22 speedy three-year-olds entered the starting stalls at 3:05pm.
The firm Royal Ascot favourite was last year's Albany Stakes winner Venetian Sun, who had dominated the market ever since her superb victory in the Sandy Lane Stakes. Aidan O'Brien's Albert Einstein was looking to end a three-race losing streak, despite being described as "the fastest horse we've ever had at Ballydoyle" at the start of the campaign.
Charles Darwin and Wise Approach met again after finishing first and second in last year's Norfolk Stakes. Clive Cox ran trial winners Coppull and Song Of The Clyde. Division represented William Haggas and Wathnan Racing.
There was a strong international contingent in this year's Commonwealth Cup. Wesley Ward's Outfielder flew the flag for the USA. Francis Graffard's Samangan was joined in the field by fellow French challengers My Calyx Cen and Kimi Rey.
Pattern winners Havana Anna, Zanthos, Song Of The Clyde, Havana Hurricane, Northern Champion and Fitzella added further depth to the field. Aspect Island, Midnight Tango, Brussels, Spicy Marg, Rock On Thunder and Super Soldier also took their chance.
2026 Commonwealth Cup Result
| Position | Name | SP |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Venetian Sun | 11/8f |
| 2nd | Spicy Marg | 50/1 |
| 3rd | Division | 8/1 |
| 4th | Havana Anna | 28/1 |
| 5th | Fitzella | 50/1 |
As expected, the large field split into two distinct groups. Fitzella showed plenty of early pace in the centre group, with Rock On Thunder leading a much smaller group along the inside rail.
At the halfway stage, it was clear that the group down the centre of the track held the advantage. All eyes were on Venetian Sun, as Clifford Lee moved the favourite out of Fitzella's slipstream and asked his mount for a serious effort.
Karl Burke's filly quickly moved into the lead. Michael Bell's outsider, Spicy Marg, was hot on the leader's tail. Division emerged from the pack late to give Venetian Sun something to think about, but Clifford Lee's mount stuck her nose out on the line to claim a narrow victory.
Spicy Marg ran a massive race to lose by such a narrow margin. Division continued his fine seasonal form with a third-place finish. Donnacha O'Brien's filly, Havana Anna, kept on well to finish fourth, ahead of the front-running Fitzella.
Albert Einstein flattered to deceive once again. Those drawn on the near rail were inconvenienced by the pace of the race. But this was all about Venetian Sun, who claimed a second Royal Ascot victory and will now have the July Cup firmly in her sights.
