2025 Nunthorpe Stakes Tips - Walker's star sprinter overpriced in ante-post market
The 2025 Nunthorpe Stakes, set for August 22nd at York, presents an open field with no clear superstar. Lady Iman may be favored but lacks strong historical precedent. Mgheera, a five-year-old trained by Ed Walker, emerges as a promising contender, showing remarkable form in prior races and adapting well to faster ground conditions. Despite competition from Time For Sandals and others, Mgheera's performances make her a formidable choice. Regular survey of form and race conditions remains crucial for punters aiming to capitalize on race day opportunities.
- 2025 Nunthorpe Stakes lacks a standout favorite
- Lady Iman favored, but historical concerns persist
- Mgheera shines as a top contender with strong past performances
Early tips for the 2025 Nunthorpe Stakes, which will take place at York on August 22nd.
This year's Nunthorpe Stakes is lacking a superstar, and the betting looks incredibly open. Lady Iman is the early favourite, but only two juveniles have won this historic sprint since 1956, so I wouldn't fancy backing Ger Lyon's filly at her current odds of 4/1.
The only Group One-winning sprinter near the head of the market is Asfoora, who hasn't looked anywhere close to her best this term. Most of the other fancied horses have plenty to prove, and none of those priced at 20/1 or bigger float my boat. I know the sprinting division is known for upsets, but few of the outsiders bring any kind of form with them to York, and most will be available at a similar price on the day of the race.
2025 Nunthorpe Stakes Ante-Post Tip - Mgheera
Time For Sandals certainly has the quality to win this great race, but her recent drift suggests that Harry Eustace is looking at the Sprint Cup. Another mare with a big chance is MGHEERA (12/1), and I wouldn't be surprised to see Ed Walker's five-year-old go off at a much shorter price.
A consistent sprinter in France for Manon Scandella Lacaille, Mgheera took a giant step forward after joining Ed Walker. Walker's recruit recovered well after a slow start to win a Group Three at Longchamp on her stable debut. Mgheera then flew home to strike in the Temple Stakes at Haydock, where William Buick's mount defeated She's Quality, Washington Heights and future King Charles III Stakes winner, American Affair.
Walker's five-year-old was due to run in that Group One at Royal Ascot, but spread a plate on the way to the start and was withdrawn. To get a run under her belt before York, Mgheera ran in the Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh - where Ryan Moore's mount conceded a lead to Arizona Blaze coming out of the gates and could never peg the leader back, but stayed on well to finish a clear second.
Connections have said that the Nunthorpe has been the plan since the Temple Stakes, so Walker will have been delighted with that effort on Irish soil. Despite her strong form in France, Mgheera has seemed at her most comfortable on faster ground. Conditions at York should be ideal and we're almost guaranteed a fast pace for Mgheera to be aimed at.
Verdict
Mgheera is our early selection for the 2025 Nunthorpe Stakes.
