Here's our ante-post selection for the Ebor Handicap, which takes place at York on August 23rd.

One of the biggest handicaps of the flat racing season takes place at York at the end of next month, as a classy field contests the Ebor Handicap on the final day of the Ebor Festival. Today, I've taken a look through the ante-post market and picked out a strong contender who I feel is overpriced.

2025 Ebor Handicap Ante-Post Tip - Plage De Havre

Willie Mullins has a stranglehold over the Ebor betting. Hipop De Loire was the unlucky loser in last year's contest and warmed up for his return to York with an easy win over hurdles at Galway. Ethical Diamond ran out an impressive winner of the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot and he's the only other entrant sitting on a single-figure price.

Irish horses have won four of the past six Ebor's. Willie Mullins' duo will be joined on the boat over from Ireland by Joseph O'Brien's dangerous trio of Aeronautic, Nürburgring and Mr Percy, while London City looks to have a live chance for Joseph's father, Aidan O'Brien.

The leading home challenger could turn out to be PLAGE DE HAVRE (16/1), who I expect will go off much shorter than 16/1 once Oisin Murphy is confirmed in the saddle. Andrew Balding's four-year-old progressed nicely on the all-weather over the winter and got a taste for the Knavesmire when third in the Jorvik Handicap during the Dante Festival.

Murphy was forced to wait for the gaps to open, after being drawn on the rail in stall one. Plage De Havre muscled his way into contention and picked up well late on, but Almosh'her sat just behind the leaders throughout and had plenty left in the tank late on, kicking clear to secure a two-length victory.

On his most recent start, Plage De Havre ran out a ready winner of the Old Newton Handicap at Haydock. Balding's four-year-old travelled like the best horse throughout that valuable handicap, finding an extra gear in the final two furlongs to secure a hugely impressive four-length victory.

Plage De Havre received a nine-pound hike for that victory, but he's a lightly-raced four-year-old improving at a rate of knotts, so I doubt this fresh mark of 101 is beyond him. Balding's rising star is guaranteed a spot in the final Ebor field and this looks to be his only entry, so Plage De Havre will be fully revved up and ready to go once we reach the final day of the Ebor Festival.

Verdict

2025 Ebor Handicap

Plage De Havre won the Old Newton Cup in tremendous style on his last start. Andrew Balding's four-year-old could improve again for this step up in trip and Oisin Murphy's mount should go off much shorter than 16/1.
