Day 2 of the Galway Festival 2026 presents a mix of exciting flat and jump races, including the highlight COLM QUINN BMW Mile Handicap. Expert tips spotlight FASTNET CRYSTAL in the Novice Hurdle, BOOYEA as a strong each-way contender in the Mile Handicap, and ALMEIYDA for a bold showing in the Irish EBF Maiden. Punters are advised to consider recent form and historic trainer successes, especially Weld in flat maidens. Key recommendations focus on value bets and horses likely to excel under current ground conditions.

Galway Festival Day 2 Tips - Tuesday 28th July

4:40pm Galway - Novice Hurdle Tips

Ireland's top National Hunt trainers all have runners in Tuesday's opening Listed contest, and I'm going to side with that man Joseph O'Brien again and back FASTNET CRYSTAL (11/2).

O'Brien's mare went close on her bumper debut at Thurles just before Christmas, flying home from the rear to finish second to Lennon Grove, who went on to finish runner-up in the Grade Two Mares' Bumper at Aintree. FasTnet Crystal was then virtually pulled up on heavy ground at Punchestown in January, but returned from an absence two weeks ago with a maiden hurdle success at Downpatrick.

Fastnet Crystal jumped and travelled nicely throughout that 18-furlong maiden hurdle, before kicking six lengths clear on the uphill run to the line. The track at Downpatrick is very similar to Galway, which will stand JJ Slevin's mount in excellent stead as she takes on the geldings at Listed level.

6:45pm Galway - COLM QUINN BMW Mile Handicap Tips

Just over a length split Pierre Royal and BOOYEA (16/1) when the two met at the Curragh last month, yet there's a huge disparity between the two in the betting for this premier handicap.

Booyea travelled nicely behind the pacesetters that day, hitting the front with two furlongs to travel. Pierre Royal then came looming into contention on his outside, and Booyea drifted a little right as he came under pressure, but still managed to finish three lengths clear of the third-placed horse.

Tom Gibney's six-year-old hasn't won for a while, but he's at his best on this sort of ground and is rated seven pounds lower when finishing eighth in this handicap two years ago. Booyea boasts strong each-way claims.

7:45pm Galway - Irish EBF Maiden Tips

Dermot Weld was, for so often, the man to follow in Flat maidens at the Galway Festival. Weld has won this very race on countless occasions, including three times in the last ten years, and I could see ALMEIYDA (13/2) going close on Tuesday.

Weld's filly ran twice over a mile at the back end of last season, finishing a long way behind Ballydoyle fillies in both races. Almeiyda finished fourth behind Dark Lucinda on her return over ten furlongs at Gowran Park, but was dropped all the way down to seven-and-a-half furlongs for her most recent outing at Roscommon.

Chris Hayes' mount looked very comfortable over this shorter distance, and almost led from pillar to post, until she was passed in the final 100 yards by the well-backed favourite Elusive Echo. This race looks highly competitive, but if Almeiyda can take another step forward, I see no reason why she can't mount a stiff challenge.
