The Galway Festival’s Day 6 brings an exciting afternoon of jumps and flat racing on Saturday. Key betting tips include Avalo (7/1) in the Galway Tribes Handicap Hurdle, Double Powerful (12/1) making his Irish debut in the BOYLE Sports Handicap Hurdle, and Fratas (6/1) as a strong contender in the McDonogh Capital Investments Handicap. The festival's penultimate day promises both exhilarating races and value bets, with ground conditions possibly impacting the final selections. Savvy punters should track weather updates and heed the highlighted picks.

Galway Festival Day 6 Tips - Saturday 1st August

2:37pm Galway - Galway Tribes Handicap Hurdle Tips

Sam Ewing and Peter Fahey team up with AVALO (7/1) again, having enjoyed a memorable handicap win at the Punchestown Festival in May.

Avalo looked progressive in handicap hurdles at the beginning of last season, and picked up where he left off at Punchestown. Ewing kept a prominent position on the rail throughout, sprinting clear of the field with British raider Pioneer Pete before edging out Jonjo O'Neill's hurdler in a head-bob.

Pioneer Pete has won since then, and the seven-pound rise that Avalo received from the handicapper seems very fair indeed. Hopefully too much rain doesn't get into the ground on Saturday, as Avalo is a fast horse who enjoys good ground.

3:12pm Galway - BOYLE Sports Handicap Hurdle Tips

Comfort Zone will bid for a Festival double, having won the valuable Connacht Hotel handicap earlier in the week. I like the chances of British raider DOUBLE POWERFUL (12/1), who make his Irish debut on Saturday.

Neil Mulholland's star has always had plenty of talent, but can throw in the odd stinker or two. Double Powerful went close on his chasing debut at Cheltenham in October, but then failed to complete his next three starts and ran poorly as the favourite at Musselburgh and Kempton in the spring.

Mulholland's seven-year-old did stay on from out the back to finish a close second to the classy Iberico Lord in the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton, and relished more prominent tactics when second to Tranquil Sea at Plumpton last time out. Double Powerful didn't see out the 3m1f trip that day, so the drop back in distance today will certainly suit and I fancy Richie McLernon's mount will relish the challenges of this track.

6:05pm Galway - McDonogh Capital Investments Handicap Tips

One for Joseph O'Brien in the finale, where I'm backing FRATAS (6/1) to finally put her best foot forward on the flat for Joseph O'Brien.

Fratas reached a peak mark of 89 on the level for Michael Mulvany in 2023, before going over hurdles. Fratas ran in the 2024 Triumph Hurdle, and went close in a number of races in 2025 before joining O'Brien after a poor effort at this meeting 12 months ago.

Following a pipe-opener on the flat at Limerick in June, Fratas ran a cracker in the Mares' Handicap Hurdle here on Wednesday, losing out to Venusienne as Harry Cobden rode his first Galway winner. That run should have given Fratas plenty of confidence, and there's no doubt that she's well-treated off this reduced mark of 78.
