Albert Bartlett History

Originally known as the Spa Novices' Hurdle, this Grade One hurdle was added to the Cheltenham Festival schedule in 2005.

Albert Bartlett took over sponsorship of the race in 2007, and it's been known as the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle ever since.

The Albert Bartlett is known as being one of the most difficult races at the Cheltenham Festival. For novice hurdlers, this three-mile trip can be very testing. It's also a tricky race for punters, as there have been plenty of upsets down the years.

AP McCoy is the most successful jockey in the Albert Bartlett, with the last of his three wins coming onboard At Fishers Cross for Rebecca Curtis in 2013.

Weapon's Amnesty ended his first season over hurdles with victory in the 2009 Albert Bartlett. Charles Byrnes star would go on to win the RSA Chase as the following Festival.

Bob's Worth also completed the Albert Bartlett, RSA Chase double, winning both races in 2011 and '12. In 2013, Nicky Henderson's star powered up Cleeve Hill once again, winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup under Barry Geraghty.

Unowhatimeanharry handed young trainer Harry Fry his first Festival winner in the 2016 Albert Bartlett. Two years later, Colin Tizzard was celebrating, as Harry Cobden guided Kilbricken Storm to a surprise win.

Penhill handed Willie Mullins his first Albert Bartlett victory in 2017, before going on to win the Stayers' Hurdle on his return to Cheltenham 12 months later.

Henry De Bromhead celebrated an unlikely winner in 2019, when 66/1 outsider Minella Indo triumphed under Rachael Blackmore.

Punters had a much better time of things in 2020, as the four most-fancied runners occupied the top four places, with Willie Mullins' Monkfish coming out on top.

Vanillier then sprung a surprise in the 2021 Albert Bartlett, carrying odds of 40/1 into the winners' enclosure.
