Willie Mullins was looking to complete a five-timer on day four of the 2025 Cheltenham Festival as Gold Cup favourite, Galopin Des Champs made his way onto the track.

Paul Townend's mount had run out an imperious winner of the Gold Cup in 2023 and 2024. A third-successive victory would see Galopin Des Champs join greats like Arkle and Best Mate in the horse racing record books and punters couldn't contemplate defeat, backing the defending champion into 8/13.

Sitting closest to the favourite in the market was supplementary entry Inothewayurthinkin, who had seven lengths to find on Galopin Des Champs from their clash in the Irish Gold Cup. Joseph O'Brien was represented by King George winner Banbridge. Emmet Mullins' National Hunt Chase winner, Corbetts Cross also carried the colours of this week's leading owner, JP McManus.

Monty's Star and Gentlemansgame bolstered the Irish challenge. Just three British horses featured in the Gold Cup field, with The Real Whacker, Royale Pagaille and Ahoy Senor available at 33/1 or bigger.

Ahoy Senor was the first to show and make the running under Derek Fox. Gentlemansgame went forward early too, along with The Real Whacker. Banbridge was ridden a little more prominently than expected, with Inothewayurthinkin and Corbetts Cross held up off the pace.

Paul Townend took a fairly wide passage on Galopin Des Champs in the early stages and the favourite wasn't particularly fluent. Inothewayurthinkin and Corbetts Cross made early mistakes too, as Royale Pagaille toiled at the rear.

Monty's Star almost unshipped Rachael Blackmore as the race reached its half-way point. Paul Townend looked unflustered aboard Galopin Des Champs as the field took the home straight for the first time. Ahoy Senor was jumping noticeably well at the head of the field.

The crowd roared the field into the first bend and there was little change in the order. Galopin Des Champs began to make a bit of progress. Banbridge travelled powerfully on the rail. Royale Pagaille was the first to lose touch.

Ahoy Senor took a tumble at the seventh-last flight, and Galopin Des Champs was forced to swerve wide to miss a collision. Townend straightened the favourite up and took aim at the leading duo, as Banbridge began to feel the pace.

Four from home, Gentlemansgame opened up a lead over The Real Whacker. Galopin Des Champs jumped into second place at the third-last, as JP McManus' duo began to make their moves.

Turning into the straight, the crowd roared as Galopin Des Champs hit the front. Corbetts Cross crashed out at the second-last flight. Inothewayurthinkin, however, was starting to find his stride and took aim at the favourite jumping the last.

Galopin Des Champs' spot in the history books began to slip away, as Inothewayurthinkin asserted between the final two flights. Gavin Cromwell's star, who wasn't even in the race this time last week, strode five lengths clear of Galopin Des Champs in the blink of an eye and Mark Walsh punches the air as Inothewayurthinkin landed the big one.
