2026 Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Key Trends

  • 11 of the last 11 winners were making their handicap debut
  • 11 of the last 11 winners had not run at Cheltenham before
  • 9 of the last 11 winners had won over hurdles already that season
  • 9 of the last 11 winners carried 11-00 or more
  • 9 of the last 11 winners had run at least once that year
  • 8 of the last 11 winners were trained in Ireland (All of last 8)

Puturhandstogether was the eighth successive Irish winner of the Fred Winter when he claimed victory for Joseph O'Brien 12 months ago. Irish raiders dominate this betting heat again, and Saratoga tops the early market.

Saratoga is a half-brother to Brazil, who beat Gaelic Warrior to win this handicap for Padraig Roche at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival. Like Brazil, Roche's recruit started his career at Ballydoyle with Aidan O'Brien, and has been given an almost identical jumps campaign to his sibling, placing at Punchestown in December and twice around Naas.

Saratoga's exploits haven't gone unmissed by the British handicapper, who handed the favourite a mark of 130. When the three 138-rated fillies come out, Bertutea will likely carry top-weight off 136, leaving Saratoga shouldering 11-6 - the same weight that Puturhandstogether carried to victory last season.

A strong British contingent will try to end Ireland's dominant run in the juvenile handicap. Faye Bramley's Winston Junior rivals Saratoga for favouritism. Nicky Henderson could have two dangerous runners in the JP McManus colours, Manlaga and Mustang Du Breuil. Ammes will represent James Owen, and Jane Williams' Adonis Hurdle winner La Luna Artista could also take up her entry.

Note: These selections are subject to change. All of my selections will be finalised once the fields have been confirmed.

I highlighted MANGANESE (16/1) as an outsider to respect in my guide to the 2026 Triumph Hurdle, and I'd be keen to back Max Comley's mare if she turned up here.

Manganese made the headlines at Leicester in November, where a loose horse almost brought her hurdling debut to an end on the first circuit, but she still went on to beat Trad Jazz by two lengths. Manganese followed up at Catterick just before Christmas, before going on to defeat Manlaga in what turned out to be a match-race between the two in a Listed race at Doncaster.

Her mark of 125 seems very fair, and David Bass would be carrying just over 11-00 if Manganese is confirmed for the Fred Winter. This tough, gutsy mare has some solid form in the book, and a horse's will to win should never be undervalued.

HARWA (20/1) ran to a good level on his two starts over hurdles in France, and impressed on his first start for Paul Nolan in February.

Sean Flanagan's mount took a little while to warm up, and gave a lengthy lead to hot-favourite Springhill Warrior and the front-running Lincoln Du Seuil. Between the final two flights, Harwa quickened up smartly to bridge a near ten-length deficit, before strolling eight lengths clear of his toiling rivals.

His mark of 132 looks a little stiff for that performance alone, but this talented son of Saint Des Saints is strong enough to cope with 11-8 and soft ground on day one of the Cheltenham Festival would certainly suit.

Donald McCain's Listed winner Lord, and Dan Skelton's outsider Misterdoc are worth noting at longer prices.

Paul Nolan's Harwa ran out an impressive winner on his Irish debut, and this French recruit could play a leading role too.
