St Patrick's Day at the Cheltenham Festival kicks off with Turners Novices’ Chase. This race is one of the newest Grade Ones at the meeting, having only been created in 2011. Irish horses boast an excellent record, with stars like Sir Des Champs, Vautaur and Yorkhill helping raiders win eight of the eleven runnings.

I've taken a look through the current betting for the Turners' and picked out my best Cheltenham Festival tips.

The Top Two

Sitting happily atop the betting is the unbeaten Bob Olinger, who bolted up in last year’s Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle. Henry De Bromhead’s star ran out a comfortable winner on his chase debut at Gowran Park. Capodanno then made the odds-on favourite work a little harder than expected in the Kildare Novices’ Hurdle, but Bob Olinger found an extra gear and was well on top as they crossed the line.

Galopin Des Champs followed victory in last year’s Martin Pipe with an effortless triumph in the three-mile Grade One for novice hurdlers at Punchestown last season. Following a flawless performance on his first chase start over Christmas, Willie Mullins’ six-year-old made all to win the Ladbrokes Novice Chase at a canter, thrashing Master McShee and Gaillard Du Mesnil to land the second Grade One of his career.

Won’t Run

I can see there being as few as six or seven runners declared in the final field for the opener on day three of the Cheltenham Festival. Willie Mullins accounts for ten of the 23 entries. Blue Lord, Saint Sam and Haut En Couleurs look certain to enter the Arkle. Capodanno is more effective over a staying trip. Stattler looks nailed on for the National Hunt Chase and I doubt whether Egality Mans or El Barra are up to Grade One standard just yet.

Bravemansgame will definitely run in the Brown Advisory Chase, as will Dusart if he isn't saved for Aintree. Neither Riviere D'etel nor Fury Road will represent Gordon Elliott in the Turners. Minella Drama, Imperial Alcazar and Busselton are more likely to run in a handicap than this Grade One.

Best Of The Rest

Venetia Williams has been having a magnificent campaign and her unbeaten chaser, L’Homme Presse travels to Cheltenham with a genuine chance. Charlie Deutsch’s mount ran out an easy winner of the Dipper over course-and-distance and jumped nicely when winning a mediocre renewal of the Grade One Scilly Isles Chase at Sandown.

Willie Mullins’ main hope could be Jungle Boogie, who has only started three races under rules. After wins in a bumper and a maiden hurdle last season, Paul Townend’s mount made a good impression on his first chase start at Fairyhouse, making all to beat several decent rivals by a wide margin.

After second and third-placed finishes in Grade Ones, Gabynako could fly the flag for Gavin Cromwell in the Turners. Willie Mullins’ still clearly thinks highly of Gaillard Du Mesnil, despite some average runs over fences this term, and he could be another who gets thrown into the Turners.

2022 Turners Novices’ Chase Best Bet – Bob Olinger

Ruby Walsh put the cat amongst the pigeons prior to the Dublin Racing Festival by suggesting that Galopin Des Champs, who dominates the betting for the Brown Advisory Chase, could take on Bob Olinger over this shorter trip. However, following that impressive victory at Leopardstown, Willie Mullins said he didn’t think his charge jumped all that well when travelling at that speed, seemingly intimating that Galopin Des Champs – like last year’s winner of that Grade One, Monkfish – will be stepped up to three miles at Cheltenham.

Now is the best time to back BOB OLINGER, as even-money will seem like a distant memory when Galopin Des Champs is removed from the market.

Apart from a few fiddley mistakes coming home, I thought Bob Olinger jumped well on his first chase start around Gowran Park – a tricky track for novices to start out around. Bob Olinger’s jumping was better at Punchestown and, although he came off the bridle rounding the bend, Rachael Blackmore’s mount soon put that Grade Three to bed. Henry De Bromhead’s star will take the power of beating when he returns to Cheltenham, so take even money while it lasts.

2022 Turners Novices’ Chase Value Bet – Jungle Boogie

I was massively taken with JUNGLE BOOGIE’S win at Fairyhouse earlier in the season, and I can’t stop myself from backing Willie Mullins’ runner each way at 12/1 for the Turners' Novices' Chase.

Diol Ker beat Monkfish over hurdles and was only beaten six lengths on his latest chase outing in the Thyestes Handicap Chase. Grand Paradis won a Grade Three over hurdles last season and looks a classy staying chaser in the making. Both were worthy rivals on the day, but Jungle Boogie swept them aside without breaking a sweat, kicking 12 lengths clear of the pair between the second-last and the line.

On the same day, Mount Ida beat Elimay in the Grade Three Mares’ Chase. Jungle Boogie took his field along at a steady early pace, whereas Scarlet And Dove went out hard and fast, so it was no surprise to see that the overall time of the Grade Three was 12 seconds quicker than the beginners' chase. What did impress me though is that, from the fourth-last to the line, Jungle Boogie was two seconds quicker than Mount Ida - despite carrying seven pounds more on his back and seemingly never coming out of his comfort zone.

I don’t usually back horses with such little experience in Grade One races. However, we have no idea how good Jungle Boogie could be. I’d rather back him at 12/1 now than wait until the field has cut up and see him sitting at 6s.

Verdict

I'd recommend backing Bob Olinger at even-money, before Galopin Des Champs is withdrawn. I've also backed the promising Jungle Boogie each way at his current price.
