Brown Advisory 2023 Tips - Two runners to back in the three-miler

Following on from the Ballymore on Ladies' Day at Cheltenham is the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase. This Grade One has produced several future Gold Cup winners down the years, most recently Minella Indo, who finished second to Champ in 2020 before winning the Gold Cup the following season.

Brown Advisory 2023 Favourite
Gerri Colombe looks solid at the head of the betting. Gordon Elliott's star remains unbeaten during his short career so far and comes into Cheltenham having secured back-to-back Grade One victories at Sandown and Limerick over Christmas.
There are a couple of small question marks against the favourite. Gerri Colombe has never run at Cheltenham. In fact, he's never gone left-handed over obstacles. On the only occasion Elliott's charge has stepped up to three miles, Gerri Colombe was forced to work fairly hard to beat 135-rated Idas Boy.
I'm saying this not because I don't think the favourite will act around Cheltenham racecourse, or because I don't think he'll see out the trip, as I think he'll cope just fine. 9/4 may turn out to be a decent price too, especially if the field cuts up as expected.
Brown Advisory 2023 Runners
Mighty Potter sits second in the market, despite his position at the head of the Turners' Novices' Chase betting. Willie Mullins has claimed Sir Gerhard will run on day two of the Cheltenham Festival, but he's hard to fancy on the back of one chase start over two miles, where his jumping was far from convincing.
Gaillard Du Mesnil is a Grade One winner over this distance and finished a good third in this race 12 months ago. Yet, Willie Mullins' charge looks almost certain to run in the National Hunt Chase, where he'll be ridden by Patrick Mullins. Mullins and owners, the Donnelly's could then switch Ramillies to the Brown Advisory. Whether he has the class to win a Grade One is, however, debatable.
Patrick Neville has The Real Whacker entered in the Gold Cup, but a run in this novice race seems much more likely and those victories around Cheltenham earlier in the season would give Neville's front-runner a decent chance. Having disappointed on his second chase start at Newbury, Thyme Hill bounced back to winning form in the Kauto Star at Kempton over Christmas and Philip Hobbs has been working backwards from this race since the start of the season.
If the ground was to come up soft, as it did 12 months ago, then Thedevilscoachman would come into the equation. Galia Des Liteaux is another who would relish softer ground and Dan Skelton's mare ran up to a good level when winning a Grade Two at Warwick last time out.
There are a couple of others worth mentioning further down the market. Kilcruit looks ready for this step up in trip and Henry De Bromhead is confident Amirite will run well. They would have to raise their games considerably to get involved, but both remain open to further improvement.
Brown Advisory 2023 Tips
When Gaillard Du Mesnil and Mighty Potter come out, GERRI COLOMBE will be cut into a much shorter price, so I'll have a slice of 9/4 while it lasts.
Outside of the favourite, there are few who really pique my interest. I tipped Gentlemansgame up at the ante-post stage, but he hasn't been seen since that victory at Leopardstown over Christmas and I fear Mouse Morris' talented grey has met with another setback.
If you work along the line that Gerri Colombe is the most likely winner of this year's Brown Advisory, then taking 14/1 about THUNDER ROCK seems like a sensible move.
Olly Murphy's star opened his account over fences with back-to-back victories at Uttoxeter and Ascot in the autumn. Thunder Rock then jumped poorly as The Real Whacker made all to win the Dipper, only to find a second wind coming down the hill and a powerful finish saw Adrian Heskin's mount cross the line just three-and-a-half lengths behind the winner.
Again in the Scilly Isles at Sandown, Thunder Rock didn't jump fluently. Murphy's seven-year-old tried to work his way into contention heading into the straight, but he was no match for Gerri Colombe in the closing stages and crossed the line five lengths behind the winner.
Having found himself outpaced on his last two starts over two-and-a-half miles, the time seems right to step Thunder Rock up in distance. Shirocco has produced many classy stayers down the years, as has his dam's sire, Old Vic. This is the only race that Thunder Rock has been entered in at the Cheltenham Festival and Murphy has said that the plan is to run. If he stays the trip, then Thunder Rock has the ability to hit the frame.
Verdict
I've backed Gerri Colombe at 9/4, as I'm expecting the favourite to go off at a much shorter price. I've also had an each-way bet on Thunder Rock, presuming this step up in trip will help Olly Murphy's star take his form to a whole new level.
