2021 Savills Chase Runners
A Plus Tard came through late on to pip Kemboy and Melon to the post in this race 12 months ago. Henry De Bromhead's charge then finished second in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and bolted up in the Betfair Chase on his reappearance, and will likely carry an odds-on price into battle as he returns to Leopardstown.
Sitting second in the betting is Galvin, who was narrowly beaten by Frodon in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase last time out. Gordon Elliott will also run Delta Work, who won the Savills Chase in 2019 before following up in the Irish Gold Cup.
Willie Mullins will be represented by reigning Irish Gold Cup winner Kemboy, John Durkan runner-up, Janidil and last year's third in this race, Melon. Astrion Forlonge and Tornado Flyer also feature in the betting, but they both look set to run in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day.
Elliott could throw both Battleoverdoyen and Samcro into the mix. Willie Mullins' sixth entrant, Franco De Port rounds off the Leopardstown betting.
2021 Savills Chase Tips
A Plus Tard has everything going for him. Henry De Bromhead's charge has clearly improved since winning this race 12 months ago and he's the one to beat in the staying chase division this season. However, there's little-to-no value to be found backing him at 8/11, not for the purpose of a single bet anyway.
I'm a big fan of Galvin and there could be more improvement left to come from him. Although he did finish right up Frodon's tail in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase, I'm still not totally convinced he's a Grade One-quality performer just yet. Plus, I've backed him to win the Grand National, so if he wins a Grade One then I might as well tear up my betting slip now!
Only three winners in the history of the Savills Chase have been over the age of eight, so I won't be siding with either Kemboy or Melon to cause the upset. I'm usually a keen follower of Janidil, but I think three miles may be stretching his stamina a touch too far.
The only real value bet here is DELTA WORK, who won the Savills Chase as a six-year-old in 2019. Like A Plus Tard last year, Delta Work was held up off a furious gallop that day, and flew home late to pip Monalee to the post.
Having been beaten, as he always is, first time out in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase, Delta Work was backed into 6/1 for this race last year. Sadly, a slight stumble after jumping the ninth was enough to dislodge Sean Flanagan - who was deputising for Jack Kennedy - from the saddle. Elliott's charge was then caught a little flat-footed as Kemboy turned for home in the Irish Gold Cup last year, and could only plug on to finish one place behind The Storyteller in third.
I don't think anyone was expecting Delta Work, who missed Cheltenham and Punchestown through injury, to challenge on his return in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase. Jack Kennedy's mount was, indeed, comfortably beaten on the day, but Delta Work still managed to cross the line just six lengths adrift of Frodon and Galvin.
Delta Work always improved for his first run of the season. We know he performs well around Leopardstown, quickish ground will be no bother to him at all and, at the age of eight, there's no reason to think he's past his best. Take 10/1 while you can, as that's a fantastic each-way price.
Verdict
Take a double-figure price about Delta Work while you can, as he's easily the second-best horse in the race and could win his second Savills Chase if A Plus Tard is not on a going day.
